I have a little story about Discount Tire that some who are looking to make a tire/wheel purchase might be interested in.
In Jan. 2007 I purchased a set of tires and wheels from Discount Tire Online. The wheels were Victory Wheels (http://www.victorywheels.com ). I have them put on my E in March 2007 by the local DT store. In Dec. 2007 I had them removed and my winter snow tires/rims installed. March 2008 I have the winter tires/rims removed and the tires/Victory wheels put back on.
A few days after they were put on I noticed some corrosion on 3 of the 4 wheels. The corrosion was in the same place on each wheel. The wheels have no other damage (curb rash, etc.) on them. See attached pic of 2 of the wheels.
I went down to the local Discount Tire store and asked about the problem. The store manager went out and looked and after looking at the service record agreed that it really shouldn’t have happened (considering the corrosion is at the same place on each wheel).
The sticky part is that the wheels have a 1 year warranty. Technically, I am out of warranty. I explained that the wheels were not even used for 12 months and had never seen snow. The manager agreed to contact the manufacturer.
After a few weeks of the manager playing phone tag with the manufacturer, Victory Wheels denied the warranty claim saying it was over 12 months since I purchased them. The manager of our llocal store said that even though Victory Wheels denied the claim that Discount Tire would honor the warranty and give me full credit against any set of wheels that I want!
They could have told me that I’m screwed, that it is the manufacturer’s decision and I could have understood their position. But Discount Tire went way beyond what they needed to do and gave me full credit on a new set of wheels.
I know I will never buy tires or wheels from anyone but Discount Tire and I would highly recommend them to anyone.
I would also NEVER recommend anyone purchase a Victory Wheel, they do NOT stand behind their product.
Good to know - plus Discount will fix flat tires for free, no matter where you got your tires, and rotate your tires for free, same deal, as they want you to become a customer if you aren't one yet. They will also match or beat quotes from other dealers. Have purchased from Discount for years, except one time, purchased from TireRack.com. Good prices, but their agent/installers are spotty. The local one I used from their list were total crooks, and actually tried to steal two of the four tires shipped to them from TireRack. When I wrote a bad review of that installer - TireRack never posted it with that installers' other reviews on their site, so I guess they only post the good ones .

Good businesses know that by keeping a customer with a legitimate complaint happy that they are insuring repeat business. By replacing your rims they are guaranteeing that you will buy with them again. They are also betting that you will pass along the story to your friends and family and they will pass it along to theirs. So by replacing your rims for nothing they may have just sold 10 or more sets. Unfortunately many businesses don't do this anymore because of scuzzy people who take advantage of these businesses' practices.
I just suffered a wheel alignment problem. Since the last fill up I did (245 miles), my two front tires have lost 5/32 inch of tread. I hit no curb and no bump like potholes. My steering wheel was off from the track of the E.
I had the E aligned at Goodyear, where I have all my work done for years. Good to go.
I went to Discount, and they did not want to simply rotate the tires, as technically they are now toast with the wear bars showing only on the outside. They would do it if I consented to acknowledging that they needed changing.
He did say that they had a warranty that he could give me towards replacing them, instead. Nota great amount of money, but two tires, tax, mounted and road hazard for under $200.....
My wife and I have been using Discount Tires for about the last 6 years and have been very happy with the service. We live in NC and have access to 3 different physical locations and the service is always top notch. The folks there really do go out of their way to make the customer feel appreciated. If they carry the product that I'm looking for I will go there before anywhere else. Even if they don't carry it, I've given them a call and they have tracked it down for me.
i have used discount tire in little rock Ar. and they bend over backwards for me i have gotten over 4000 dollars worth of rims and tires for almost half cost. i guess it depends what sales manager you get stuck with. oh and for the discoloration, it may of happen from washing your wheels and not drying off, you be suprised what water spots can lead to
I like those better than the other set you had anyway, HobbyTalk! Looking forward to seeing you at Columbus.
I, too, have been more than pleased with the treatment I've received at Discount Tire, and to be honest, I was not expecting that response at all. I am nothing, if not a cynic.
I have to agree with the Grumpy Old Man from Minnesota.
The last two sets of tires I've replaced (one set the old Saturn, one set on the Element) have been from Discount Tire. I NEVER come away from spending money feeling good but Discount makes the $500 pain bearable.
I really liked the others a bit better, but these are growing me. Besides, they are Enkei's so they have that snob appeal
I won't be making it to Columbus. I signed up to go but we are swamped at work and I really can't get away. We normally wouldn't be that busy that time of year but we are understaffed and those of us left have to pick up the slack
I have also had good experiences with Discount Tire when I lived in TX and AZ. I'm bummed that they don't have any here in NJ. STS is the big retail tire dealer here-they seem overpriced and not very helpful.
No Discount Tire? Ack! I'd move back to civilization. :-(
There are three of them within 20 miles of my house and they've had all of my business since... hmmm. 25 years or more I'm guessing. Except for one bad experience when I wanted to try a different tire, I've always gotten their own Arizonian tires on my trucks and loved em. When the E came down with a bad case of lousy oem tires, it had to settle for Yokohamas (got them on the Pilot too, within a couple weeks of each other) but would dearly love to see them start making the Silver Edition Arizonians in the stock Element size.
Great place, nice people who care, fix flats and rotate free, darn good coffee while you wait (but never long) and no matter what the manufacturer recommends, they fill every tire to 29psi and toss your expensive valve caps in the trash - replace with plastic. Every place has a quirk or two but few of them make up for it with such fine service and prices.
I've already posted this several times, but I like the service I just got from my local Discount Tire store(Wenatchee, WA). I felt like they really appreciated my business.
I've had a great experience with our local DT on three separate occasions.
