Love, love, love my 2005 Honda Element. Have owned it since it rolled off the truck from the assembly line. I'm within spitting distance of 210K miles and I hate to give it up, especially after dropping big money on a brand new catalytic converter recently. Perhaps one of the Element sages out there can give me some advice....

Several months ago, I drove the Element to my local repair shop because I had a rattling tailpipe. Was told it needed to be replaced, but that I'd need to also replace the catalytic converter because the tailpipe busted part of the cat.

A week after replacing the cat, the engine malfunction lamp lit up. The codes indicated that there might be a coil problem with misfiring at cylinder 2, and that there might be a cat converter problem.

The repair shop replaced the catalytic converter and ignored the rest.

When the lamp illuminated a few weeks later, I brought it in to another shop. I asked them to run a diagnostic and they told me the same story with the maybe coil prob/misfiring and cat converter. I asked them to check the coils. Was told that it's never the coils. They gave me a tune up with new plugs. Car ran great for several weeks.

Then the light came on again. Brought it back to the guys who replaced the cat converter, and they came up empty-handed. Finally, after much grousing on my part, they replaced the coil at "cylinder 2". The car ran like a champ for two weeks. Now, the light is back on again.

Does this sound like it's time to put the Element to sleep, and invest in a new car? Occurs to me that I probably need to get the actual codes to share.

I'm headed tonight to an Autozone and asking them to run a computer diagnostic, and will update the post then. UPDATED: It's throwing the P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected. FYI, last time it threw the Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected code, and the coil was replaced at cylinder 2.

In the meantime, if any of you folks are still out there with your Elements, I wish you many wonderful miles. I've loved mine immeasurably. :)

Sounds like you need a better mechanic who can diagnose the real problem...is it throwing the engine code for misf..cyl 2?

Thanks for replying Ttporsche225. It is now throwing Code P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected. FYI, last time it threw the Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected code, and the coil was replaced at cylinder 2.

Do I understand correctly that you have the catalytic converter replaced three times in one year?

Replace coil 3 and see.

Not to beat a dead horse, but have the valves been adjusted (twice) at this mileage?

If unsure about the valves adjustment do a compression test. I never had a problems with the coils..the spark plugs I use the are factory ones ....

Thank you. I found a Honda specialist 45 miles from home, n have an appointment for Monday. Hope to get more life out of the E. It might be worth putting in more $, before I give up n explore a new Kia Soul. Isn't an E, but I put on 20k a year and can't go used. Crossing fingers and appreciate your help. :)
