Question -- Say that would happen to a tire with 3000mi wear on the treads.Would you have to replace all 4 tires because you should not put mismatched tires on the AWD system?
If you have THAT much wear on a 3000 mile tire, something's seriously wrong or you still have the OEM Wranglers. Either way, you need to get it fixed first. It's not the AWD system that suffers from mismatched tires unless it's a serious mismatch and you get different traction in the winter. On the other hand, I really hate not having all four tires the same so I'd change em all and gripe about the cost until everybody got sick of me.
Rule of thumb. On a smooth level area, mark all tires at the 6'0clock position. drive slowly 6 tire revolutions until one of the marks is at 6'oclock. All the tires should be near the mark or within 3 or 4 inches. Anymore than that will cause 4wd drive issues or unnecessary strain/wear on the driveline.
