Looking to buy an '03 Element Awd, and tow my '85 Coleman tent trailer...

Did a little more digging...my trailers specs are:
Curb wt. dry 1340
Gross vehicle wt. dry 1455
Gross axle wt. rating 1810
Gross vehicle wt. rating 1995

Now I'm totally confused....

Looks like I'm under the limits for towing.

I think the trailer, without any luggage, fluids, or personal items, checks in under your towing limit of 1500 lbs. But it's pushing it. It would be pretty easy to load the trailer with propane, water, food, and various camp items and quickly exceed the recommended tow limit. You don't have too much cushion, and the E's payload is not terrific either.

I sought out the lightest weight trailer I could find, an aluminum one, which weighed 350 lbs (vs 500-700 for steel). With camp gear and dirt bikes and extras, I figure I am about 1000-1200 lbs, and the E tows this just fine, though I do have to keep the hammer down on mountain passes.

I think you are fine unless you start adding lots of gear, luggage, bicycles etc.
