SO CAL CHAPTER EOC: SPRING DETAILING CLINIC 2012 SHOWCAR DETAILING, ANAHEIM HILLS, CA SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2012
It’s that time of year. The time of year when I start thinking and planning events for the So Cal Chapter. Well, let’s start the So Cal Chapter 2012 “E”-vent calendar with a little spring cleaning and detailing:
SO CAL CHAPTER EOC: SPRING DETAILING CLINIC 2012 SHOWCAR DETAILING, ANAHEIM HILLS, CA SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2012
We all could use a little car detailing. Darth Raider provided some information with his teaser thread here: http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72347. Our host will be Richard Lin, Show Car Detailing, who does the type of car detailing for high end show cars we see in magazines and on TV. So this will be a real opportunity to learn some tips from one of the best! What can we expect from this clinic? Well, the following:
1. Learn to identify correctable defects in the paint and best methods to correct them 2. Learn to identify lousy polishing work found at places like dealerships, car washes, and even body shops. 3. Learn why discussion forums and online videos can be harmful to your paint. 4. Learn how to separate the hype from the fluff when it comes to product claims. 5. You will leave better informed about what products do. 6. Help break old habits to improve your maintenance methods.
This clinic will not be a marketing presentation or a hard sell for products. Richard is putting this clinic on to help raise our expectations. This will be a hands-on clinic, so we should all dress appropriately. As I continue to work out the details for the Spring Detailing Clinic 2012, please note the information in boldand consider the following:
·Day/Date: Saturday, March 10, 2012 · Time: 9:00 am - ? · Limit on Elements: 25 · Pre Meet Location: Keno’s, 7:30 am – 8:45 am We will need to assemble at a location before the Detailing Clinic. This will be mandatory, no exceptions. We will be meeting at: Keno’s, 5750 East La Palma Avenue, Anaheim Hills, (714) 777-9511. If you want to get some breakfast before the Clinic, Keno’s is the place. The breakfast group should meet up at 7:30 am. For those who would like to skip breakfast, please be at Keno’s by 8:45 am. We will be departing Keno’s to go to the Clinic location by 8:50 am. · Refreshments: Will be provided.
I have it on good authority that Richard has found that the best way to run the detailing clinic is to choose the "worst" vehicle from those that are arriving that day and demonstrate on that. This allows more demonstrations to be done in a variety of ways than a free for all to work on everybody's car. Richard may look for a volunteer(s).
If you would like your Element to be a potential "Volunteer Car", it should be washed first before coming to the clinic just like brushing your teeth before going to the dentist. Richard will have a limited supply of distilled water for washing. He will be looking for an Element(s) with lots of swirls, fixable scratches, scuffs or transfers, faded and oxidized plastics, heavy brake dust on the wheels.
I will continue to provide updates, so please check back from time to time. Your interest for this meet is important. So, if you have not done so, please participate in the poll and post a reply to this thread. I hope that you consider attending the So Cal Chapter EOC: Spring Detailing Clinic 2012 and mark your calendars and make plans to attend. Spread the word by telling a friend! Let’s make the Spring Detailing Clinic just as successful as our previous meets. As always, thank you for your support and consideration :-D.

Bring it to the clinic and we'll take a good look at it. Everybody that signs up will get a chance to see how paint is truly evaluated. We'll look at paint thickness, paint gloss, paint purity/clarity, reflectivity, depth and what we can do to improve it to take it is maximum potential. Most people and detailers only think of gloss as a sign that their paint is at it's potential. We see a freshly washed car and think...wow that looks good. When I see such a car, I position myself so the sun is reflected off the paint, and evaluate how the light scatters on the paint. I look for paint transfers and scuffs that can easily be corrected. I look for repainted areas, different orange peel textures, I look for paint clarity, uniformity. Then I put it in the studio under my proprietary LED lights and turn out the lights and we can see things that couldn't be seen outside...yes, any volunteer car will be literally put under the microscope...I do have a digital microscope that I use for analyzing defects too, lol...but it's all in the name of fun and learning about what we can do to make things better, and prevent damage in the future. Hope to see you there!
Well note that we are still looking for clean cars...again using the dentist example...we don't go to the dentist with spinach stuck to our teeth now do we?
We aren't teaching people how to be detailers or the basics like emptying the trash from the car, lol. If the "volunteer" car looks nasty, it'll probably be passed up for one that doesn't look like it would like it could present a health issue to the participants.
Also, as has been mentioned, this is a hands on clinic. It's not a sit down and watch the pro clean up your car session.
For anyone that still has an E with faded plastics, we'll also demonstrate the new Black Wow Systeme, a product consisting of a cleaner and finisher that we've been making since 2007. It's the only system on the market that permanently removes old wax, polish, and oxidation from your trim, allowing the finisher to properly absorb and last longer than any other product, despite rain, sun, and weekly washes.
Here is my E with the Systeme applied after one week:
When we bought this E, it had 197,000 miles on it, and here is the condition of the front end with a tape line for reference.
Using the PW cleaner and working it in with a Porter Cable polisher
All cleaned up in just a few minutes of easy work
Then I used a Pressure Washer with distilled water to rinse it off
This is how much BW we are starting with.
Applied
The next day (The E sits outside at night)
Foaming car wash
Dried and still looks great
Once its been properly absorbed, usually the BW Systeme lasts for 4 to 6 months or longer depending on exposure with a very nice matte finish.
This is YOUR chance to speak directly to the inventor of the product by attending this clinic!

Richard, I just noticed your E is also NBP color. Any issues with the paint/clear cracking? Ive had this on both E's and seems others have as well. This is the main reason I want to make it to this meet to see if anything can be done.
Well considering mine had nearly 200,000 miles on it when I bought it, the hood was rock chipped and checked (small cracks) in the clear, so I didn't think much of it as an issue. The rest of the paint is fine..no cracking at all. I may one day repaint the tiny hood but not likely because this E is our shop demo car and I am retaining the original condition on one side and a fully polished and restored paint on the otherside. :-D

choosing the worst vehicle!!!! dude I so win on that. I haven't washed my baby in months. the only water she's felt has been from the rain. I think I may go to this. Still seeing if the wedding in vegas will conflict with my personal schedule.
Ahhh!!! One option might be to drop the E off at the shop the day before the wedding if you don't need it for the drive up, so we can still use it for demos.
I'd give my left doo-dad to be able to bring FISH E out to see you guys and attend this event!!
I know there are some serious E people out there, wish we could muster half the enthusiasm here for an Event as cool as this one!
Take plenty of pictures and know you have a fan that is as intense about my E as you guys!

I'd sure like to get my wife's 05 SSM w/Blue Panels (Blue Panels are the worse to clean and keep looking new) detailed like a pro.
If I can convince her to take my Jeep and give me her Element on Saturday I'll be there. (for breakfast and everything else)
Gene...it will really be woth your time! Richard, our host, invented a product that will make those panels look new again! Plus it will be damn good to see you again. You know I'm still saving those lights for you when you get ready! ;-)

I approach, they all look up and I notice they are all wearing 'street rod' tshirts.... I asked them if they drove Hondas... They all looked at me like I called their mothers *****s. Welcome to Keno's!
