My side window shattered this morning

I closed my passenger door this morning and the big long window on the passenger side shattered. The dealer said the only way that would or could have happened is if someone repeatedly slammed the door. No one has slammed the door once let alone repeatedly, in fact I closed the door rather gingerly this morning, imagine my surprise. I don’t know what I expected them to say. Anyway, what is that window called, quarter glass?

Yikes! sad day my friend. Usually those things are really tough unless you hit it with a sharp point or it gets torqued somehow.

I don't know what could have caused that. I hope you can get it fixed under warranty or something.

I think what the dealer said is a whole lot of BS. I personally would ask them to defend their claim.

When I first got my E, my passengers would constantly slam my passenger side doors, both front and back because they were not used to it. They still do at times. I myself have been guilty of forgetting to be real easy on the rear door on occasion. I have had no problems.

Good luck.

P.S. Where are you from, and what year and model is your E?

That sounds like a flaw. If your E is new it may have been twisted or something at the factory or in transport. The glass could have just been defective also. The problem will be proving it to get it covered under warranty (if it's still under warranty). Anyone could go out and smash a window then claim it just broke on it's own. I doubt you'll be able to prove it unless there is clearly a twist in the surrounding metal.

I suppose if when they try to replace the window it doesn't fit properly it would prove there is a flaw in the window frame.

Slamming your door, unless you're Chuck Norris, shouldn't shatter car windows.

Yes, it's called the quarter glass. (Majestic Honda Link for 2006 E)

auto glass breakage

in my years, the only auto glass i've broken was as i was putting the rubber back on and touched the CORNER with a screw driver, the corners are very easly broken, then the whole glass will shatter.
i'd check the area around the corners on the frame where the glass window mounted . is there anything sharp or protruding into the area where the glass would seat in the rubber? was the rubber cracked or broken in any of the corners? glass can be touchy.
check on the frame of the body where the glass seats, if there's something there that the new glass, once installed rubs and it isn't cleaned up or fixed, it will break the new glass at some point. even just a big bump going down the road if it's not seated correctly.
hope this helps Tedd

I join the consensus here...

I've heard of a few ppl having side windows broken, and I even recall someone, once years ago, reporting a rear window blowing out - but I think it was determined to be related to excessive heat, and a flaw in the glass....

But having a window shatter, because someone slammed a door? No i don't think so...
Even if the over pressure so so high, that it caused the cabin pressure to rise that high, then a window, in it's entirety should blow out (the whole window 'pops' loose), the window should not shatter...
I mean come on - they are safety glass. i don't know what exactly the safety rating is on the rear windows, but it's my understanding that the window would only shatter if something impacts against it, or the frame is warped...

Do you have comprehensive insurance? If the dealer won't warranty it, call your insurance, and see if they will cover it...?

Just a quick note to make sure we are all on the same page. Safety glass does not mean it is unbreakable. It actually breaks quite easily under the right circumstancers. It merely means that it is tempered so when it does break it ends up in tiny polygon shaped pieces that won't impale the occupants during a wreck.

My friend just had the same thing happen to his sunroof except it occured while he was driving. We puzzled over the internal pressure possibility for awhile, but I think that is highly unlikely.

Yes, there was a member who had their rear hatch glass blow out without any impact.

Maybe Honda just makes sh!t glass.

Thanks Alchemy..In my round about way that's what I meant when I said that the glass should only break if impacted...meaning shattered...
But automotive safety glass has a certain amount of rigidity and strength, to be able to withstand certain stresses...

My point is that the op said his window shattered when someone slammed the door. I was trying to agree with others that the dealer saying they must have slammed the door really hard is bs...
If someone slammed the door really hard, then the glass in that door should have broken, or one of the windows in an adjacent frame, not the glass in the rear side window!
