Programming new remote

Hi you guys,

Thank you! You were all so helpful in my earlier query about purchasing a new keyless remote entry thingie.

I did indeed get one on eBay. It was great! So much less $$! But I'm confused about how to program it. The Element manual (2008 ) only says, keyless remotes must be programmed by the dealer. My seller disagrees. Here are the instructions the seller emailed me:

************
Here is the instruction:
Note:
Entering the programming mode cancels all learned keyless remotes, so none of the previously programmed
remotes will work. You must reprogram all of the keyless remotes once you are in the programming mode.
You must complete each step within 5 seconds of the previous step to keep the system from exiting
the programming mode.

1. Turn ignition switch to ON (II)

2. Press the LOCK or UNOCK button on one of the remotes. (An unprogrammed remote can be used for this
step.)

3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK (0)

4. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 two more times using the same keyless remote used in step 2

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II)

6. Press the LOCK or UNLOCK button the same remote. Make sure the power door locks cycle to confirm you
are in programming mode.

7. Press the LOCK or UNLOCK button on each remote you want to program. Make sure door locks cycle
after you push each remote button to confirm system has accepted the remote.

8. Turn the igniton switch to LOCK (0) to exit programming mode.

9. Test remote(s)

**********
The exact number of cycles on which remote, is confusing to me from the above instructions. Here's what I *think* they mean--?

It sounds like you would go through the cycle (steps 1-3) a total of 3 times with the first remote.
Then you do it again (still the same, first remote) and see if the power door locks cycle--?
And then (without turning the ignition key again) you push the lock or unlock button on the 2nd remote? and see if the door locks cycle?
And then you exit the whole thing by turning the key off?

Aaah! Please advise! I am leaving in about 30 hours for a long trip, and I'd love to have 2 remotes available just in case we happened to lose one.

Also--Does anyone happen to know--If you lock the E without pushing the button twice to activate the alarm--Does the alarm automatically turn itself on? Or could you enter the vehicle with the spare key (no remote)?

Thanks everyone!
Happy E-ing! :)

It's easy !

The instructions will work!

Just start with one remote, and stay with it until it programs. Then go to the next remote.

If it fails on your first try, it's no big deal. It will work as it should if you stay within the 5 seconds.

Erased my remote?

I bought a second remote and was going through the instructions to program it, but I did something wrong because now my original remote is not working at all. I fear I erased my original -- is there a fix to this or do I have to go to the dealer? Searched the forums but couldn't find a solution . . .

Thanks.

Moved your thread into here. The instructions are here. Did you program ALL
your remotes?? Im guessing you programmed just the new remote. If so, then
yes, you did something wrong. If you did, then not sure, try it again.

Programming the keys

I have looked, but I think my search-fu is broken, so maybe someone can help me.
In my job, I am in charge of over 200 vehicles, and am in charge of making sure we have extra keys. Alas we don't have any Hondas, mostly Ford, Chevy, and now Prius. 99% of the keys that have a chip in them are easy to program for the Ford's and Chevy's. All you do is take the two original black keys, insert one key turn on engine, turn off engine, remove first key, insert second key, turn on engine, turn off engine, remove key, insert newly cut "blank" key, turn on engine>>>>Voila, new key programmed.
Is this the way Honda keys are done too?
Does anyone know?

If so this may save someone some $ from having the dealer program the keys when you can get them cut, and program them yourself.
The only problem for me is that when I bought my car, there was only one black key and one grey key :( and one remote so now I need to get another one and figure out how to program it.
Thanks!

Not sure how you are searching Sammielexie, but I just typed "Program Remote"
into the search box on the right, and this thread was the 6th one down on the
list!!! The search button that the forum provides works great. If you use the
advance search, it works even better!!! As for the google search, it has been
pointed out to the Admin that it doesnt work. Its being looked at.

Freddy the Element is talking about the chip that allows the E to recognize
the key and allow it to start your E. Programming the remote to lock and
unlock your doors is one step. Its a step that anyone can do. Adding the
chip to the immobilizer portion of the E can not be done without the proper
software/computer.

It's been awhile, but I finally got my new remote fob sorted out, here's what happened:

Got the remote/key blank from "artiway" on Ebay. The remote programmed perfectly, took it to a locksmith to cut and program the key. The locksmith cut the key ($30) but could not program it -- and the key would only go into the ignition and driver door, not the back hatch or passenger door. Found another locksmith who could program it ($30 again), but he couldn't make the key work on the other two doors. He claimed the blank key was a valet key and would never work on all doors.

Dissatisfied, I wrote to artiway on Ebay and he said the key was not an valet key and had been improperly cut -- if I would mail him an original key and the improperly cut key, he would make it right at no cost. He's in Taiwan so I was hesitant, but I took the chance. For an extra $30, he promised he would forward me an additional remote/key fully cut and programmed as compensation for my experience.

It took about 5 weeks to send the key and get it back, but I'm happy to say that artiway did everything as promised -- both new keys work flawlessly in all respects. So all's well that ends well. Should have just sent the key to him in the first place!

Programed keyless entry

Hey Fellow E drivers,

This worked great. just got a remote from Ebay for $35 bucks, and now my 2006 ex has keyless entry! I bought the car 5 years ago, and just made the last payment on it two weeks ago. I bought it with out the keyless remote, and wanted to get it ever since. except the dealer told me it would be about $150 bucks! so i put it off forever.... thanks to this forum, i finally did it, and at a great price! thanks so much

Big lesson about Honda - They sell the cars for one price and then they suck you dry with highly inflated service and parts prices forever after.

Both of my remotes have stopped working after only 1 1/2 years (lock works, unlock doesn't). If I buy new remotes from ebay and do the reprogramming as explained here, does this programming affect my ignition key in any way?

Edit to add: Just went to ebay and want to clarify that I am talking about the remote on the key fob; not the combination key/remote that I didn't know existed.

Nope. They're two separate systems. Remember that you DO have to program all of your remotes at the same time and the remote in the combination key/remote can be swapped out if the remote goes bad so you won't need to have a new key cut & programmed. I already had to do that once - bought a replacement (used) Pilot key on Ebay and then swapped the remote in to the old key. If you open the case for changing the battery, the whole transmitter falls out. This was a surprise for my local dealer who insisted we needed to buy a new key and have it programmed again. $200 plus turned into $8 and two minutes with a screwdriver.

you mean a noise similar to what happens when you leave the lights on and open the door?
and the noise/beep is heard as you open the door just after unlocking?

the vehicle is telling you that the lights are on and you've opened the door.
of course the lights are only the parking/marker/side lights and they're only on very briefly to acknowledge your request to unlock the vehicle.

solution: unlock the vehicle when you're further away from it, so that the lights have already done the flash thing when you open the door. of course, if you do it when you're so far away that it takes more than 30 seconds for you to open the door, you'll find that the door has relocked itself. so, choose your distance for using the remote wisely. <grin>

Not working

I'm sure i'm doing something wrong or just too impatient but I can't get it into the programming mode. I know it has keyless entry because it came with it and I lost the original key fob. I've got two new ones and I've tried with both.

Do I just keep trying? After three times, should i take the key out to start over or just keep repeating steps 1-3 until i get a clunk?

I think I'm following the instructions to a tee.

Worked for me!

Thanks for the good directions! I bought 3 Ridgeline keys online, took them to the dealer, who said it wouldn't work. Told him to do it anyway.

They cut them and successfully programed the immobilizer, but were unable to program the door locks on more than one key. I took them all home, and followed these directions, and they all worked.

One bit that took me a second to figure out... when it says to press the lock OR unlock, that is an OR, not an AND. I did both lock and unlock with each cycle, and none of the keys programed right. Then I realized it was an OR, and just used the lock button each time and everything worked great.

When I did it to add a 3rd remote, I felt like Daniel in the Karate Kid movie.

Key on, click, key off. . .

I ordered a new keyless entry fob and followed the above instructions and this did NOT work at all for me. We still have the old fob which is hanging by a thread and it still works if you lean heavily on the worn out/cracked unlock button so we will stick t that. But the point is the directions for reprogramming a new on (part 08E61-S5D-1M001) do NOT work for our 2003 Honda Element.

did the new fobs you acquired have the same FCC ID as the old fob that is barely hanging on?
i ask because a lot of 2003 models didn't come with remote lock/unlock when they left the factory, so dealers installed whatever they thought was appropriate, which may not be compatible with fobs from later years.
