So checking out some of the different ways you guys have been making beds to fit in the back of the E I was inspired to make one myself. So I popped out the backseats, did some measurement, went to home depot and this is what i came up with.

- 3/4" plywood for the top. (started with half inch I had laying around and it wasn't thick enough, and bowed too much.)
- 4 pieces of 2"x3". (I don't think 2x4 is necessary.)
-a few screws, and carriage bolts for one of the boards. (the reason being after the fabric was stretched the boards overhand the plywood and could not be stretched with the 2x3 screwed in place, and could not be screwed in after.)

The full bed laid out.

The rear piece of the bed. The rounded edges go in the back contour to the cars interior, and the 2x3 sits on the small storage compartment lip on either side.
The second 2x3 had to be notched out for the bolt it lays on top of.

The front piece, not pictures, also has 2 2x3's attached to it. One sits half on the edge of the board and it slides underneath the edge of the back plywood, and secures on the front of the rail where the rear seats latch into.
The front 2x3 lays across the seats, and so far seems like it will work out great! It is very sturdy.

Next I covered the wood with cheap wal-mart sleeping mats, They created a good bottom layer before the foam to add extra support.

Luckily, my uncle is an amazing upholsterer and sewed the fabric for the cover.

Next lay the 1" foam on the two pieces. I could have gone thicker, 2 or even 3 inches, but foam is expensive!!

Covered it in cotton stuff, i cannot remember the name of it.

Stretched the custom sewed cover on, staple it up, then I covered the bottom in black felt I had laying around.

Very nice job. Best I've seen and I've been reading the posts for a long time.

How many sections of 3/4 plywood did you use? It's hard to tell from the pictures. Is there a gap between the forward end of the plywood sections and the folded down front seats? Do your feet rest on the backs of the front seats when you're lying down? How did you attach the side curtains?

Thanks! I ended up having to use 2 8 foot sections of plywood because the measurements were a tad too long to use just one full piece.
The rear piece is about 52" wide x 40" deep. and the front piece is about 50" wide x 42" deep.
I'll link to a video I'm just editing now that explains some more of the bed.

Alright, so the dimensions of the bed are as follows.

Rear Piece:
53" wide x 40" long x 4" deep
weighs just about 40lb

Front Piece:
52-1/2" wide x 44" long x 4" deep
Weighs just over 40lb

they can fit together to be about 7" deep and still 53" wide and 44" long
Both pieces probably be about 85lb give or take.

I love your curtain idea! I'm totally making some of those.

The last picture of my post with the bed inside the vehicle, you can see some of the curtains there. They look horrible though, but currently i'm working on ways to make them look a little more profesh. right after I get back from snowboarding saturday!

Are you viewing at work? Many workplaces ban certain websites like youtube, vimeo, Facebook, etc. I've seen several threads here where I can view picks at home but not at work.
