Okay, so I noticed something pretty odd... I saw some debris wedged between the driveshaft and the gas tank so I started removing it only to find that the shaft and the tank are TOUCHING! You can even see where the shaft has been rubbing as it rotates, it's shinny metal as opposed to the slightly corroded surface that the rest of the shaft has. Pretty sure this could be the noise issue. I'm yet to get under there and play around.. but how the heck could this even happen? Only thing that I can think is that the center support for the shaft is loose.. or the tank?? Any ideas?

SOLVED: the fuel tank guard bar that protects the fuel tank was hit at some point and bent up, pressing the fuel tank towards the drive shaft. Took the bar out and all is good—noise is gone. Now to bend it back in shape and put it back in, I suppose.

She said that she remembers hitting a curb or something on a left turn a couple years ago, which could do it, but weird that it would start rubbing so long after...
