The panels are still gray and original. But before using the Mother's BTB they we're kind of a lighter / oxidized / faded / blotchy gray.

That picture on the previous post really showed the contrast; and you're right, the panels almost look black from that angle. I just wanted to highlight the dramatic change brought on by using the BTB.

I attached a new picture to show the finished product. The E is looking much better these days! Not bad for a 16 year old car living in hot and humid and high UV Florida!

te1966, It looks great for an 03. I have been wanting to "black out" my panels on mine for a while. Mine is GGM , i think it would look nice in that color combo. I keep rereading post about Mothers BTB and other coatings and paints, Trying to "pull the trigger" . This summer for sure when I remove the front to install new lights. Thanks for the photos.

zenbuilder: Thank You! I had to wait about 9 months (I bought the E just 9 months ago) before I pulled the trigger!

Strange situation. The previous owner had sprayed some cheap clear coat on the panels. I wasn't sure if they sprayed all or just parts of the side panels; either way they looked pretty wonky! However the cheap clear didn't adhere well and was slowly flaking off. Rain was my best friend in this case. Every time it rained a little more of the cheap clear flaked off! And after each rain I helped it flake off by scrubbing it with a little brush!

So I played the waiting game! As the Rolling Stones sang: "Time Is On My Side!" I mean the last thing I wanted to do is "seal" that old clear with BTB or something else so it stopped flaking off! Eventually all that cruddy old clear was gone!

And I pulled the trigger a few days ago! It was worth the wait!

One more thing for you to consider. Here's some Paint & Body 101: If you really want Black (like Pitch Black; glossy or otherwise) side panels and want to eventually paint them Black, DON'T try anything like BTB on them first! Any of those waxy / oily sealers will really stay with the plastic (I think the silicon in the BTB is the culprit here); and you may or may not be able to clean it off of the plastic panels well enough to avoid those "fish eyes" in your paint. (The voice of experience here! Made that mistake more than once!) It takes a whole lot of cleaning with strong solvents and perhaps some time as well to get all that thick wax off so you can paint them.

I just painted my roof panels a few days ago too. Check it out in the Miscellaneous section under "What Did You Do To Your E Today?"

te1966, thanks for the reply, and the tip onBTB first. I think i'm going to get a "used" panel to experiment with first.
