Bed

I stole some ideas on making a bed in the back from this site, and I wanted to post my results.

It took about 2.5 hours, and was around $130. Here's the breakdown:

-7 12" steel pipes (threaded on both ends). We had a few 1/2" and a few 3/4". I would recommend 3/4"
-14 flanges
-1 8x4 sheet of 1/2 plywood.
-1 6x5 piece of auto carpet
-screws/nails

We cut two pieces of plywood. One 47" (the top piece), and one 46" (the bottom). We decided to just go with 2 pieces of plywood for ease/simplicity (instead of building a frame below it). We screwed those together.

We then put it in the element, put the legs under it, and traced out exactly where we wanted to put the legs (on the plywood). We took it out, screwed the flanges on, and then wrapped it with carpet. We also used some S hooks to keep the bed moving forward while driving (we weren't going to until we realized how easily it could move). But after putting in the S hooks, it's solid.

It's awesome. We've been sleeping in our car a lot the past 6 months, but it's been pretty obnoxious. We would transfer everything to the front seats, and just throw our thermarests on the floor in the back. This should make life a lot easier.

Building it was a lot easier than I thought too. One thing we're thinking about adding is a 2 foot extender on hinges to go over top of the front seats. We want to try it how it is right now for a while, but if it's uncomfortable at the feet, we're going to add it.

http://www.rishio.com/blog/2008/06/i...-platform.html

this platform builder appears to use just 3-4 inch foam over the front seats as an extension of the bed , easy to fold and removes many lumps / edges that might dig into the calf / knee .... good luck :)

Update

We just finished it completely. Heading to california for a week tomorrow to try it out! We used cheap velcro for the curtains, and bought a full size 2" memory foam pad for the mattress (and put our thermarests under it).

Looks good. On your facebook page, it says Sapphire's Lounge.
To me, it looks more like Ruby's Lounge!!! :D

Have a great time in Cali, what part are you heading out to??
