2003 Element Rumble Strip Type Vibration

7061 Views 55 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  ramblerdan
Hello, 2003 Element EX runs great 95% of the time. Every so often I will be driving along and without warning it will feel like you are going over those rumble wake up strips that are on the side of the interstate. This might last 2-5 seconds then quit. It is starting to occur more often. Any ideas on what is causing this would be great. Really notice it when driving around 30-35MPH because that is all the faster my wife will let me go since it is her rig. Thanks.

Welcome to the asylum!

Is your E a 4WD and is this by any chance happening when you're turning the wheel? If so I would hazard to guess your rear differential fluid is in dire need of changing.

Yes it is AWD and it does also make the rubbing type sound when the wheels are turned. I did some research on this site and did see where the diff fluid needs to be changed. I just thought that turning vibration was due to tires catching the fender on tight turns so never thought twice about it. I am hoping after I changed the diff fluid my other problem will be solved as well.
Now I just have to drive the 40 miles to the stealership to pick up the fluid.
:-( Thanks!
Keep us posted on the progress! I'd imagine if you haven't had your rear diff fluid changed since you got it, even if it isn't the problem it needs doing anyway.

Will do. Rode the Hawg down to the big city today and picked up diff fluid. $10 and some change for one quart! Is the stealership the only place to get a rear wiper blade? I'll let you know if the fluid change solves all my vibration problems.

Yep, I haven't found anywhere else you can get that wiper blade. It has a proprietary connection, I've gone through the entire index of wiper blade attachment thingies at a good auto parts store before with no luck finding one that works.

Was the fluid you got Dual Pump or Dual Pump II?

If you shop around on the internet you can get Dual Pump Fluid II for around $6 a quart you always need 2, plus the crush washers.
The Tranny fluid is also pretty much honda only and again around $5-$6 I beleive HandA has both in that range plus crush washers.
Aprillaguy has a nice write up on who to change both.
Chris
Dual Pump II. The parts guy said I only needed one quart because I did read the excellent how to Aprillaguy wrote and it said 1.1 quart. So I told the part man that and he said I only needed to put in 1 quart because that is all they add there in the shop when they are doing a change. They probably charge for two quarts! He didn't say anything about crush washers as I thought they are reusable?

I would put in 1.1 qt as that's what the specs call for. As far as the crush washers, they crush and deform to seal the hole tightly, they're single use only.

Crush washer---Autozone or am I headed back to the stealer?
Here's another question since you all are so helpful, (which I greatly appreciate)...Say if someone was colorblind...would Sunset Orange Pearl be considered Rust Other Type or ROT?
That depends on who you're asking! If you're inquiring from an SOP owner, they'll tell you it's the most glorious colors of the sunset combined with the delicious tanginess of oranges and a heavy dose of sexay.

But more to the point, what are you asking in reference to?

Crush washer should be available from local parts stores. It's aluminum ... don't have the size, though.

20 mm I.D. for both the drain and fill plug washers.
Thanks for the washer info. In ref. to the color question...I am the one who is colorblind and it looks Rust to me or maybe it is Red or Orange? I do think it is more Orange than Red. I do know it is not Black or Blue or Yellow or Green. If it was Green then I would wonder if it is Brown.

I believe that question would best be directed to Jojo, Queen of the Sexy SOP's

Sunset Orange Pearl = SOP is a dark orange with slight hint of red. It changes more red in direct sunlight.
It is the most glorious brightest, sexiest of all colors made or will ever be made, and being even a color blind person thought it was great color, well........enough said;-)

OK Thanks for the clarification. I am pretty sure it is a SOP. Good thing you said something about the sun because it does turn a whole another color when the sun hits. It is supposed to rain today and tomorrow, so it looks like Saturday will be the day for diff fluid change. Oh maybe some day when the world (or at least my world) is right, I will be able to work in my garage out of the weather. Most likely I will build another one before that happens.
