Hi,
I'm a new member to the club.
My 2005 Element 4WD EX AT shift lever is stuck in park, and I have to manually release it by poking a wooden chopstick in the hole in the console next to it.
I've had it looked at and was told I need a new computer (ECU ECM). Does anyone know if I can buy a used one without checking to see if the computer will work with my specific VIN number?

Thanks in advance.

There is a solenoid that controls allowing the shift lever to be taken out of park. The brake has to be applied. If you place your hand on the shift lever while pressing on and off the brake pedal while its in park do you hear any kind of click sound? The brake switch might need adjustment, or the solenoid coil might be open(as in no continuity). I really wouldn't expect a EMC unit to be bad. I'd look at those other things first. This is where a shop manual from Helm or purchased used on the forum is real helpful.
