We wanted a platform to use on trips and I designed an interlocking box system but MRS MT BIKE found the platform that hotkarl put together and liked the simplicity so we went for that.
The main barrier to entry for hotkarl’s system is the fabricated brackets, which have to be fairly accurate, so I prototyped some on the 3D printer and printed a set on the 3rd iteration, based on hotkarl’s drawings.
The 80/20 system ended up being quite a bit more expensive than we estimated and here in Canada the supplier doesn’t stock 48” sections but cuts long lengths up, which results in some random hole spacing and much more trimming.
We also had some trouble finding the 3 layer lexan sheeting but eventually came across a greenhouse supplier that stocks it, again, way more expensive than the US

in the end it came out really well once we had all the components, though if I did it again I might try to use rivnuts to prevent the storage boxes getting stuck underneath.

Hello MT BIKE,
I have been searching for hotkarl's platform. I have not been able to find it. Will you please post the link for it?

Thanks,

The brackets are the same for the newer element; the big difference is that you loose at least three inches of length with the newer seats. @Hot_Karl made his 80/20 lengths just fit the forward tilt of the older Element's seats. I adjusted the front flap down panel by putting the two 9" lengths on the outside of the two 48"

to save a LOT of money.. start collecting bed frames from the side of the road or thrift stores... super light and strong steel... can't be drilled though, you have to weld mild steel to it to drill
