Hi,
Saw this!

This can also happen if your Timing Belt breaks, but...

The K24 Engine has a Chain so doubt it broke!

Adjust your Valves, Folks!

A chain can stretch and also tear.
But Honda engines are not known for it....

Wow! That's a pretty extreme case!

From what I understand, it's more often than not the exhaust valve clearance gets so tight that it keeps the exhaust valves from closing completely, which in turn causes burning of the valves themselves.

Regardless, do a valve adjustment! It's cheap insurance!

That was not the result of a lack of valve adjustment. That was due to a failure of the cam timing chain system. Either the chain broke or it got badly worn due to a lack of proper lubrication and jumped time. Timing chains don't stretch, they wear and get longer due to the accumulated play in the links and link pins.

Hi,
Yes, looked pretty violent, and not adjusting valves usually just burns the valve (bad enough!), but...

Whoever the Owner was SHOULD of got an CEL on the dash. (out of time, stretched chain)

If they chose to ignore it?

Thought I would put it up anyway cause some people (even HONDA Dealers!)...

Don't think you need to adjust the valves!

As per your definition, this is actually timing chain “stretch”. 😉

Hi,
The best way to avoid or help prevent stretch is to keep your oil level up where it belongs at all times.

The timing chain has to pick up oil from the bottom of the engine and carry it up where needed.

A low oil level hampers that process.

The Dude in the Vid might of been mistaken on his diagnostics, but his heart was in the right place, and he has a lot of Vids on maintaining the Element!
