Honda designed them that way to protect you from the Element's puny little battery and electrical system - and yes, it's a real PIA.
Use the search function on the top of the screen and you'll find a bunch of threads covering how to fix it. BTW, I found it easier to put in a couple new sockets than try to change the socket on the dash but the one in the back is a snap and a 2" piece of wire.
