Yesterday I changed my Power Steering fluid for the first time. I replaced the old with the Honda Genuine fluid. I used a turkey baster with a short hose extension, and was able to get out right at about 8 ounces of the old fluid from the reservoir. I squeezed the old fluid into a white plastic butter container.

But when I looked at the old fluid closely, there was this black gritty stuff in it that had settled to the bottom of the butter container. I probably vacuumed it off on the bottom of the reservoir.

So, Is this normal? Or, is the demise of my Power Steering pump imminent?

Please let me know. Thanks! :)

Can't really answer whether or not your PS system is terminal, but, would DEFINITELY recommend flushing the system. Here is a DIY link on how to accomplish that (did it myself by this link, easy to do). Would suggest re-checking fluid in a 1K miles or so.....

Good luck!! :)
