There are a handful of Fire Lookout Towers in California that are not used anymore for that purpose (airplanes and satellites are more efficient), so they are being rented out:

I booked the Oak Flat Lookout Tower above the mighty Kern River around Labor Day last year and it was spectacular. Stunning 360-degree views, a fully outfitted kitchen, and two comfy cot-type beds for a-loungin'. The road was decent - certainly no problem for an Element - with some rock-hopping up the final steep mile or so. Those forty steps straight up are No Joke, though - my nervous friend could only go up once per day (and the outhouse is on the ground...).

Anyhoo - I have Oak Flat booked a couple more times this Spring/Summer. This location would make for a nice mini-meet - though the rules say two vehicles max, there is plenty of room below the tower to fit in several E-camps. Pretty awesome living room view up top!

Perhaps we'll talk more about this at Death Valley...

DJEMBE...

Wow...! This is seriously a COOL idea...! How did you stumble upon this...? I do a bit of camping and am looking for ways to get the "greenhorns" to fall in love with the idea of camping the great outdoors and break them in s-l-o-w-l-y... LOL!!!

Thanks...!

I booked Oak Flat again for a long weekend again this summer. It is fantastic!

Ric,

Richelle and I would love to go!
But no 40 steps for us. :x
(I could use the exercise but Richelle's knee is not in shape for long stair climbs)
We'de rather hang out at ground level and you guys can toss pistachio shells on top of our tent.
