There are a handful of Fire Lookout Towers in California that are not used anymore for that purpose (airplanes and satellites are more efficient), so they are being rented out:

I booked the Oak Flat Lookout Tower above the mighty Kern River around Labor Day last year and it was spectacular. Stunning 360-degree views, a fully outfitted kitchen, and two comfy cot-type beds for a-loungin'. The road was decent - certainly no problem for an Element - with some rock-hopping up the final steep mile or so. Those forty steps straight up are No Joke, though - my nervous friend could only go up once per day (and the outhouse is on the ground...).
Anyhoo - I have Oak Flat booked a couple more times this Spring/Summer. This location would make for a nice mini-meet - though the rules say two vehicles max, there is plenty of room below the tower to fit in several E-camps. Pretty awesome living room view up top!
Perhaps we'll talk more about this at Death Valley...
