My 2003 Element has just hit 90,000 miles. About a week ago, my "Check Engine" light came on, then went off, and yesterday, it came on again.

I want to drive the car until I can get it checked out.

I want to know if it is safe for me to continue to drive it with the light on.
Will the car leave me stranded if I continue to drive it?

Anyone have any information or opinions?

Thanks in advance!

as long as the light is not BLINKING, it is safe to operate. the check engine light will FLASH/BLINK when the engine is doing damage to the catalyst while the engine is missing (not firing on all cylinders) is the only time it should not be operated. if there is another problem the engine might not run as well as it could, or be running on a base map or open loop, but it will not be doing any damage. should take it in and get it fixed of course, but you won't damage it.

Mine came on last week. I remembered I had filled up with gas earlier, so I checked the gas cap. I removed it and then screwed it back on until it clicked. The light still stayed on until I stopped at a restaurant for about a half hour. When I got back in, the light was off and hasn't come back on since.
