The vast majority of places that sell it, around this neck of the woods, will cut it for you. It does come in 1" thickness. You can have them cut it 1" long if you like. That would give you a piece 1"x1"x4' long. I think I would go with a 4" long section then cut what I needed. For the 1"x4"x48" chunk, I paid 12$.

Dom
That's actually not a bad idea if you can find a place that sells it locally. Waterproof, strong, and it'll hold up whatever crossbars you put on quite well :D

OMG, that's a lot of supplies, I'd rather get get the stock Honda ones since I only need to hold 4 snowboards in the winter.

I'd love to make one, but man that's a lot of tools I don't have!

No need to go through all the trouble to make one if you don't need the extra capacity! And if you do need it, the offer is still open for me to make them. Also I believe the user Turbo on here has a custom DIY one for sale right now :D

I did the research and made it because I needed more capacity, didn't feel like paying Honda's outrageous OEM prices, already have all the tools, and love to build $hit :D

I didn't read through the umpteen pages here so forgive me if this has been mentioned. If the powdercoating is too expensive, try POR15. You could probably paint it for about $30 and that stuff is bulletproof. No worries about scratches or rusting.

It's a rust prevention paint. They also have a whole rust removal/prevention process and products that work absolute wonders. Guys in the custom/rebuild motorcycle world swear by their products.

It paints on with a brush but drys to a glass-smooth, glossy finish. Make sure you wear old clothes though. When it's fully cured its very scratch resistant. My first experience was when a friend tested it on a tow hitch receiver. Looked fantastic. We couldn't cratch it with a knife. Three years later, still looks like it was just painted. In the car guy world, alot of people use it to protect areas that tend to rust like floors and trunks because it seals the moisture out. Great for suspension components such as anti-roll bars and control arms that are often exposed to corrosives and road debris.

Yup. POR-15 is good stuff. Read the instructions carefully. Don't buy too big a container. Pour out what you'll need into a disposable container to work with. Clean off the lid lip well or the lid will be imposable to get off the next time. It won't come off clothing or skin.....or the rack.

Duly noted. I won't be doing it anytime soon though, due to my lack of anything resembling an income...

Yup. I was "tight" enough before. Bugger #2 (another boy) is due in July and sales have been way down at work since winter.

I think I had more money back in college, I paid for school, a crappy house, and a car. I sold t-shirts & beer and collected rent from a few roommates.

I need a roofrack too. Guess I'm getting creative. :D

I'm working on an idea now that will use the scraps the bargain basement people throw out.
My current project is designing a rooftop-mounted tent system, kind of a poor-man's E-Camper that can be removed. It's gonna be a lot of work and REALLY ghetto :D

Maybe a big cardboard refrigerator box bungyed on....with a shoping cart parked right next to it as a roof "safari" basket.
LOL

Not quite that ghetto, it'll all fold down into a relatively thin roof case. I gotta nail down how the design is gonna work first though.

looking forward to seeing what you both come up with! I have read many posts from both of you,and I have to say- Much Respect! Since I am also wanting a rack, but trying to mod on the cheap, i will definitely keep an eye on this thread.

wish I did...

but unfortunately, I don't have the tool setup you do Twilight. Otherwise I would have already started coming up with something,or other, based on your prototype!:) I have read your account of the construction of your rack several times over the last few months, but just can't picture myself doing anything similar with just a hand drill and a hacksaw.

Which is exactly why I rated it as an expert project for major tool usage/owning

I can still make bracket sets for sale if someone wants one, I might even make a new set for myself while I'm at it. I have some slightly different ideas on how to do it better. Problem is my original idea was just too damn good and it won't break, rust, or anything

PM me if you're interested, we can probably work something out if you really want a set.
