Better to hole up for another night than to stay in the madness. Traffic was still in “slinky” mode (stop, accelerate, screech to a stop) at 10 pm. I had another steak with jalapenos for dinner, and enjoyed looking out the window of my hotel at the poor folks trapped on the road. I drove back into Big D Monday morning. I had already scheduled the day off to make a 4-day weekend with this possibility in mind.
Impressions on the E:
-I was able to stay upright and more comfortable than in any previous vehicle. I have killer arthritis in my hips and knees, and I was able to take an 11 hour drive and still feel OK. Although, due to the crosswinds, I was gripping the wheel too hard and my left hand is still hurtin’ a bit.
-The combination of steep hills, head winds and use of the a/c meant that the E downshifted to 3rd on every hill. It was seamless, and stayed in 3rd until the hill was done. By hill, I mean Texas hill country back roads - pretty steep grades. But, I really prefer an aggressive tranny/cruise control combo and it got to where I didn’t even notice the downshifts as all it meant was that speed was maintained.
-Gas mileage didn’t vary too much over the course of the trip. Average was 21.56 overall. I don’t feel bad about that at all, considering the load, heat and humidity.
