Remove the fuse cover panel below the steering wheel there will be a large wire harness that comes from the steering colum, right were it come out from the colum there is a short section where all the wires are exposed, find the RED wire with a WHITE STRIP and single SILVER DOTS. if you cut this wire it will disable the beeper for ONLY the key in the ignition warning, the "lights on" warning will still work and so will the three short beeps when you first start the E. TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT WIRE IT WILL TEST AS NEGATIVE ONLY WHEN THE KEY IS IN THE IGNITION. if any one has any questions I will be able to post pic in a few days when I get my camera back!!

[quote:ce8f7dee81="eMass"]It's not like a bomb will go off if you cut the wrong wire - just splice it back together if it doesn't work. :D

In fact, I might wire the two ends up to a switch so I can turn this feature on/off.[/quote:ce8f7dee81]

I just love a handy man.

Do share with us if you decide to do this. I'd cut the wire (and hope for no Kabooom! ) but I'm such a noodlehead  it wouldn't hurt for me to have the reminder beep about a key in the ignition. A switch would be a great solution.

There are two (2) red wires with white strips and silver dots, one of which controls the low beams. I know for I did not check with a test light and ended up reattaching the wire. When testing the correct wire it will show positive when the key is out.

I read this tip from another post on these forums, and IMO it's the best way to do this: There is a sensor on the driver suicide door that feels when the dirver door closes. You'll see where the door would close on it, little black rubber thing. So on the top part is a little cover that you can open with your finger nail, and you'll find a metal screw holding the rubber thing on. If you take the screw out, the door sensor no longer works and the beeping won't happen when you open the door with the key in. When you take the metal screw out though the rubber thing is slightly loose, not bad, but loose. I'm trying to find a plastic screw to hold it on, no luck so far Home Depot doesn't have em. One thing to keep in mind if you have the security system, the system will auto arm after so long if you don't open a door after disarming it. So, just make sure you disarm it and then turn the thing on within 20 seconds or something like that. It hasn't been an issue, no big deal, but I did notice you can't lolly gag around. I keep the metal screw in my change holder in case I need it. Anyone find a place that sells the right size plastic screw for this?

the problem with the plastic screw idea is I believe this is the ground screw for the switch which is required for the dome light to work and if you have the factory alarm installed this is the door sensor for the alarm

Thanks for the tip on this! I just want to be sure: That wire will test +12 volts (approx) when the key is out and will test 0 volts when the key is in, referenced to negative (chassis ground). Is that correct?

Thanks again,

I just took the plunge and confirmed what I thought I had understood. There seemed to be three candidate wires in the relatively dim light under the dash. My usual method of piercing the insulation with a pin to get juice to the multimeter lead resulted in a pierced finger and two bent pins due to the tough insulation on those wires. Naturally, it was my third choice that turned out to be the one. Boy was it nice to cut that sucker! What an annoying, er, feature...

When i opened the fuse box, i saw four rows of green connectors and more misc connectors below that, the top row has a red wire with white strip and silver dots as described and there are also maybe two other places with the same color configuration, do you remember which row of green connectors THE WIRE was found? Or is it below that? Any sort of mark identification where it is would really help me, thanks to all!

I did this on my car last night and wanted to clear up a few things. On my 2003, I didn't find the red/white/silver wire in the bundle on the steering column (I did find red/white/silver wires, but none were the wire in question). I found the wire going to the "X" connecter on the back of the fuse box. It was actually a red wire with a white stripe and two silver dots right next to each other. If you have the FSM, you can look it up in the body electrical section. It's a single row 8 cavity connector on the bottom drivers side (I think) of the back of the fuse box. The wire in question is in position 5 on the X connector. I was able to pop just that wire out of the connector without cutting anything using a small screwdriver. I taped it back up to the rest of the bundle so it wouldn't short on anything and the key beep is gone!

Edit, found an image of the fuse box on another member's website:
