I've been lurking around unregistered here for a while now and I have to say this place is a goldmine of info about the E. I searched around for this subject and came up empty, however.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever dropped something like a clip inside the bumper while messing with lights or anything else. I was taking off my OEM fogs and when pulling the left one up (towards the top of the car) to get it out I heard the wonderful sound of something rattle down inside my bumper. Sure enough I get up to my apartment and see:

The little plastic "hook" (or retention thingy) came off one of the parts that slides down into the bracket.

It was already dark when doing this, so no way I'm going to find it this instant, but maybe in the morning. I cant fit my fingers down into it to touch the inside bottom of the bumper either.

Are there any quick solutions to getting in there? Any good tools to use to search around inside the bumper? Will it be detrimental if I forgo the hook and just put the fog back in with 1 out of 2? Is it likely the clip is just going to fall out of the bumper a minute after I start the car and go for a drive?

I'm hoping I won't have to remove the bumper to get at it. I'm usually without a good area to work on the E, but tomorrow I'll have a garage, lots of tools, jacks and stands if that's going to help me at all (assuming the hook doesn't manage to find a way out before I get to the garage). I also did this with one of the little plastic white clips that holds the taillight housing in place a while ago, but I put the taillight back on without it and it seems to stay put quite securely. That clip may still be hiding in the back bumper as far as I know.

So... anybody have a similar experience? Thanks

I think all of us that work on our E's have done that at one time or another.

I can usually fish it out with one of my grabby tools. There are times when it's just as easy to pull the clips out of the bottom of the bumper and stick your hand in to grab the stray part. By that time the part has normally acquired several new ( not so nice ) names!
