It smells like exhaust inside my 2004 Cartiva. Bought it used in September 2018. Paid for a pre-purchase inspection, shop has been specializing in foreign cars since 1975, I know the owner (through the Peace Corps alumni association), mechanic said nothing about the smell, but the exhaust system passed inspection. What would you do next? I'll hang up and listen. Thank you very much! ---steve

Have your guy check the gaskets at the exhaust manifold and behind the catalytic converter. They wear over time and require replacement, especially the cat gasket because it’s the pivot point for the aft muffler chain. If it’s deteriorated, not only will it smell, you will also have a much quieter ride inside the cabin and outside once replaced.
