Hey perf,

Any update on your custom mirror kits and the 200-300 'generic Gentex' mirrors?

- Justo
Thanks for reminding me, I needed to post an update since a few people are looking for this. I got my E back and was going to work on these this week but my thumb and a shedge hammer tried to occupy the same space last Saturday, OUCH . Right now I'm down a thumb so doing something that requires some detail is on hold, sorry about that. I'm hoping to be healed up soon but it may take a couple of weeks as there's nothing left above my thumbnail right now. The bright side is that my thumb is really visible if I need to hitchhike :)

Thanks!

Great Looking Mirror Upgrade

Hello,

I'm somewhat new to the boards. I have read many of the post but this is my first reply. I just have to say, your mirror modifiation is awesome! My wife and I were just talking about how we missed having direction and temperture info available in our element. I would certainly love to purchase the components if they are available. If not, your plans would the next best thing. Please let me know if you will make them available and if so, please put me on the list!

Thanks,
Doug.............

Thanks, glad I got you to post, please don't stop. There's tons of cool mods by many people.

If you complete your profile that helps all of us out.

As above, I'm dealing with a smashed thumb right now but I'm healing up, hope that next week it bends enough to start on these.

Can you guys help out....I checked Ebay for the Taiwan mirror, and came up with zip. Found one for $95 by seller named yovus. Can anyone provide further info?

Thanks
I just found my invoice today from when I bought mine, the seller was merchantrun.

Yovus puts some mirrors up there with a Buy It Now, other standard auction. The last few went in the $70-75 range.

Perf,

How's your thumb?
How is your thumb doing? Aside from the mirror mounts, I hope you're doing well. We actually got into a discussion at work about losing fingers (we have a lot of time to kill on the second shift), and concluded that obviously losing your thumb would be the absolute worst digit to part with. Reminded me of your thumb and was wondering how it's doing.

Thanks. I think the issue is the small gap between the mirror and the first plastic piece. I was thinking about how am I going to find a piece of plastic that exact thickness but the neoprene will do the trick, it's gotta be almost paper thin and that will compress down. Now I just have to have the E here.
To solve this problem on my jeep where I need a gasket of sorts, I use cut up tire inner tube. A local tire dealer gives me useless tubes for free...

yovus (eBay Seller)

Can you guys help out....I checked Ebay for the Taiwan mirror, and came up with zip. Found one for $95 by seller named yovus. Can anyone provide further info?

I purchased the following two auto-dimming mirrors from yovus:
1. With Temp/Compass/UV which I installed in my E (eBay auction about $60.00)
2. No added features which I installed in my wife's PT Cruiser. (eBay Buy It Now for $30.00)

I have only good things to say about my dealing with yovus.

There was excellent communication between yovus and me. Both times I paid on the day the auction closed using Paypal. Depending on the time of day I paid, yovus shipped either that day or the following day and emailed me that the mirror was shipped. Both mirrors I received within 4 US Postal Service Days of shipment. We both left positive feedback for each transaction.

I had no problems installing either mirror. There is a link in my signature for the 'type' of install (made a custom mount) I did on my E. For the PT Cruiser, I just had to run the power to the mirror harness. The mirror uses the same mounting as the PT Cruiser.

The mirror has been in my E about 6 months and it works exactly as expected. The mirror in the PT Cruiser has been in for less than 2 weeks and my wife says she likes it. She never liked the way the 'flip' looked, so she always suffered with the glare at night, now the glare has been virtually eliminated.

The above is entirely my opinion based on my dealings with yovus, others may have different experiences.

Some Honda Dealers Carry After Market

Spoke with Honda Representative and was told the same thing. I was told to be very careful about who installs the aftermarket item. I also spoke with a representative from Gentex and was told Honda could carry the item like so many other car makers but does not want to - I guess not enough interest.
I was at a Honda Dealer yesterday, and they had a 'universal' auto-dimming mirror in their parts window. The dealer said they were carrying them because of the number of individuals that want them installed. He said they would not install on any vehicle that did not use the familiar button/wedge mount; and no, they would not install one on an Element as it is not possible.

I took the parts manager out to see my E to show him the auto-dimming mirror in my E.

I received several positive comments from him.

First, he was surprised to see me use the Acura switchblade key to unlock the doors and when I started the E; he did not realize that this was possible.

His next surprise was when I unlocked the doors and the lights at my sidesteps lit up. He thought that was a great way to see the sidesteps after dark.

Next we looked at the mirror. I removed the mirror so he could see my solution for the mount. He was impressed, especially that someone would fabricate a custom mounting block that uses, without destroying, the Honda mirror base plate. I showed him that it is possible to install a 'button/wedge' mirror in an Element. His only negative-type comment was that it was too bad that I had to cut some of the fins on the underside (hidden in ceiling/roof area) of the mirror hole cover.

He also likes the South Coast Carpets in my Element. It was the first time he ever saw custom carpets in an Element that fit as well as, in the front, or better than, the rear, as the Honda carpets. He thought the cut, fit, and finish was excellent.

The parts manager also liked the unique solution of the 'Target' table rear shelf, especially the usability of the table as a shelf and as a table. As he said, for under $30.00, I have more flexibility and ease than $150.00 worth of Honda parts (rear cover and table legs).

I told him that none of these were my original ideas and that these and other ideas and information can be found in this forum.

That's all.

so, I just purchased the Cipa auto dimming, temp, compass and map light mirror from Amazon. It uses the wedge mount as well. It was a bit more in price than has been indicated but less than what yovus has on e-bay right now. Any progress on the mirror mount kit?

Update

Between the smashed thumb, being busy, and having driven the E only 4 times in the last 3 months I haven't played with this much. As you know from a post above I had a mirror shaking issue I was trying to remedy.

Turns out after a few more tries with this it's the mirror itself that has the issue. I'm going to get another mirror (Gentex?) and try again.

I believe whatever I come up with will work with any of the aftermarket mirrors but it's going to be awhile, sorry about that.

Update

Hi Everyone,

Mrs. Perfdata told me I better give everyone an update on this.

After messing with my mirror and trying several things I have determined that my mirror is bad, it is loose where the "stem" mounts to the body (large part) of the mirror and I can't tighten it up, it vibrates no matter what. I did not get my mirror from Yovus but it is the same one he sells right now for $119 By It Now +$15 shipping.

I sent him an e-mail asking about warranty, this unit has a 30 day warranty. I looked and found he sells a Gentex mirror with the same features except UV for $249 shipped free and a 3 year warranty (I have not checked other sellers, there may be a better price from someone else), I think I'm going to go this way (you get what you pay for).

I don't want to make these "kits" if they are going to cause vibration issues, I want to get it right and as far as I can tell what I'm making will work with all of these types of mirror. Also, you will not have to alter the plastic trim piece that snaps into the head liner.

More soon, I know this has to be frustating, I'm in month 14 of this project. And my thumb is healed but still no feeling in the end but I'm gettings used to that. I took the end off another finger with a hacksaw years ago and same thing, I got used to it after awhile.

I promise, I will work on this before my 12 volt coffee maker mounting kit.
