Okay....so I have never owned a new car....but I heard a rumor that for the first 1,000 miles you shouldn't go over 60 mph.....truth or fiction?

Only reason I ask is that next month we are going on a road trip and I don't want to mess-up my new engine or my new E.

Please Advise!

*I am begining to wonder why I never took an auto shop class....they really should be mandatory like Gym or Spelling....heehee!

That's a nasty rumor. For break-in, i like to get on the interstate and maintain a constant speed of around 70 mph for at least an hour. In fact, i will usually do a 2 and a half hour drive to Dallas as a "break-in run". Most instances I'll do this the first available weekend after delivery. I have always broken in my cars this way and never had an oil burning or oil consumption problem. In fact on my last car (97 Civic EX Coupe), I sometimes achieved 40 mpg. All at 85 mph, air-con on, no tailwind, fully loaded with heavy dive gear on a hot summer night yet.

Wow, id have the ac on if I was wearing heavy dive gear during a hot summers day. LOL, j/k. (come on now, I had to say it)

You dont really NEED to break it in. Its a Honda. Just dont dog it out.

Manual says the first 600 miles to kinda summerize ( hard accelerations and hard braking are to be avoided). I don't remember mention of actual speed. I kept my E at 65 mph on the highway. I do mostly highway driving and had learned a long time ago that my new car break-in period needs to closely mimic my future driving environment. (Rural, suburban, urban). I am also careful to avoid hard acclerations/braking/cornering within the first 1,000 miles. This is my forth new vehicle. The previous 3 vehicles (Mitsubishi Mirage and 2 Plymouth mini-vans) all went to 125-150,000 miles without any mechanical repair beyond routine maintenance before getting rid of them. I drive to consult with accounts for work and avg. 25k miles a year. I use up vehicles every 5 years. I hope to keep this Honda for 250,000.
