If anyone goes off road, ie dirt/gravel roads and does not ding the fuel tank along with anything else is smoking the funny weed. It seems that Honda as an after thought decided to hang the fuel tank as close to the ground as possible.
I just completed over 30,000 miles touring the US and Canada in the last 5 months. Just seeing the fuel tank hanging as low as it does and feeling it scraped the ground or getting on/off ferries is not a pleasant feeling.:x

There are a few threads about the fuel tank and Honda also sez that the Element is for light off roading. I just installed a lift kit in mine and will get to test it over the winter but so far it is working great and I did some good off roading to test it out and got no hits on the tank.
