Hi all! I was having starting issues recently with my 04 EX. Also the radio was cutting in and out more frequently. After reading various posts on here, I changed my negative battery cable (which was literally hanging on by 2 threads) and put in a new ELD. Neither helped the issues. So we replaced the starter. The starter is in, connected properly etc. and the E started right up. Now, after about 20 minutes of operation my ABS light came on, radio cuts in and out, lights start to dim. I let it sit for a while visiting friends and it started right up, no ABS light, radio working ... then about 5 minutes later the ABS light came on, radio cut out and lights started to dim. Within 10 minutes all the dummy lights came on, my fishes all dropped to zero (E gas, O speed) and the odometer went blank. It was sputtering and died a block away from my brothers house. We tested it and the battery had drained. The battery tested good before we replaced the starter. We charged the battery and my E started right up - no dummy lights ... all seemed normal. So, I let it run for 20 minutes and all the issues listed above happened again! I see people post similar issues but no resolutions ... can anyone help me?? I absolutely love my E and want him to be fixed!

Sounds like a major electrical problem. None of these problems before you put new starter in? Computer malfunction?

Right, none of these problems except for the radio cutting in and out occurred before replacing the starter.

I’ll bet you have a weak connection somewhere, or perhaps your alternator is going bad. I had the exact same symptoms last week and it turned out to be a loose positive battery cable. Hondas hate voltage fluctuations and will do all kinds of weird things.

A few years ago I nearly flagged the alternator as defective due to low output. At fault was the ELD, which uses some sort of voodoo to lower the output (to save 0.0000001 gallons of fuel every 100k miles, LOL).

Instead, replacing the battery with a larger one made the difference. I was troubleshooting an occasional no-start condition, which was resolved with a new starter and starting relay under the dash.

It has been a permanent fix.

Since you just replaced the starter, make sure your mounting bolts are tight and the electrical connections are correct.

I can't speak to the ELD you replaced, I haven't done that.

Good luck.

Also be POSITIVE you put all the exhaust heat shields and cable covers back on.. Very possible you could have heat-damaged a wire after the new starter install.

Did you use an OEM Honda starter? Apparently, some aftermarket starters affect other electrics in the car. After my mechanic buddy changed his to an OEM is he has been good.

Hello,

So I literally had this exact same problem and issues all last year (2018) going into early 2019.

After troubleshooting the issue, it turns out my cause was from something so simple, I was deeply ashamed. The root cause of my issue was from my positive battery cable coming loose from the positive battery terminal.

I'm on an aftermarket battery (Interstate brand) where the positive terminal post is just a hair small compared an OEM battery. Since it is, it doesn't allow me to completely lock down the connection w/o modifying the connection.

After making the adjustment, the symptoms you described I was going through went away.

If you can physically rotate your positive connection on your battery post, that may be your culprit.

Keep us posted what you find out.

Thank you ... still working on him! My battery connections are solid and we made sure all the connections were reconnected (I’m an amateur but my bro has been helping me and he’s been working on cars since he was a kid). Since I’ve posted I took it to a mechanic that tested it and said it was the alternator. So, we replaced the alternator today ... and the same exact symptoms as before occurred. Someone’s had to have had this happen to them also. I see similar posts but no resolutions. You all understand how much I love my E!!

Ok, so major electric malfunction is now fixed. I took my E to an auto electric specialist ($800 later) there were a few wires that were dead leading to the alternator. He traced them down and rewired them so all the functionality is back (including the radio). Now I just have to figure out my check engine light and sputtering issue ... which I thinkk may be the spark plugs. Just wanted to update!
