This weekend my driver side airbag blew for no reason. I've been assured by the dealer that "they have never heard of this", but a look to the National Highway Transportation Safety Admin shows three of us with a 2003 Honda Elementa with a VIN starting "5J6YH28...." have had side airbags deploy spontaneously.

Honda started a "small" recall for airbags that has since blown up, ironically, to include a LOT of 2001 and 2002 cars. Wanna bet our 2003's got what was at the bottom of the parts bin?

That sucks that your side airbag blew, but I'm not surprised that if only 3 people have complained over the last 7 years to the gov't that your dealer has not heard about it. Around 50k 2003 Elements were sold, and only a small number of the EX had side airbags (it was an option, not standard, in 03 and 04).
The main Honda recall of the Accords is for the front airbags, not the side airbags deploying with too much force.
More info on your accidental side airbag deployment would be appreciated, especially what cause your dealer might find so that if other people have the same issue they can deal with it as well.

Driver seat airbag issue

Hello everyone, i am new on this forum and im glad i found it. I have a 05 E that was bought new. The driver seat side airbag sudden discharged while my wife was driving on the highway back in 07. We reported it to the dealer and was told she must have hit a debri or something for it to have discharged and therefore advised that we should take it to our insurance. My wife swore that she did not hit anything. Needless to say that we did not take it to our insurance as we would have to pay $1000.00 deductible which would have been almost the cost to replace it and we are still driving the E with a discharged airbag.

FYI....my VIN also starts with same letters as the 1st person on this thread.

The first three digits of the VIN are a manufactures code and nothing more. All Element VIN's start out 5J6YH after that comes model designations for 2wd/4wd, then transmission, grade(LX, EX, etc), a check digit, year, factory, the last six are production number or as Honda calls them "consectutive unit number.

I do not know for sure but suspect that most if not all auto manufacturers have had vehicles that discharged airbags for no apparent reason. I have heard of it happening in Alaska but not with enough detail to identify a specific brand or model of vehicle.
