...of tracking my mileage! I'm tired of looking at my trip meter and the position of the fuel guage. I'm tired of driving like I'm in a hyper-miler contest. Tired of getting my receipt and punching numbers on a calculator. I know what my E gets per gallon by now. I mostly drive short trips all over town (I love doing tight U turns!) and get around 18/19 city mpg and I have broken 20 city mpg and have dipped into 17 mpg in the winter. So, I know the E's potential if I want bragging rights to not-too-bad fuel economy. Now I just want to drive it 'normally' and enjoy it. I'm not talking driving it like I stole it but I promised myself to lighten up a little and just drive it and enjoy it. Anyone else with me?

i'm with you 100%. as a matter of fact, i was thinking the same thing this week. the mpg doesn't change that much from tank to tank. like yours, mine consistantly gets around 20. almost every tank is the same. i agree, i am going to stop worrying about it and just drive!!

I used to just do a quick comparison between fill ups. My average fill up was about 50 litres and i would get 490-530 km's per fill up.

What does that translate to in mpgs? I don't have a clue. Was never that big of a deal. If i really wanted something that sipped gas i would have bought a civic hybrid.

I pretty much resigned myself to that fact about 6 years ago...lol

I like that we have metric here in Canada, and the price of fuel is about $1/li (no I really DON'T like that part that much) but it makes the math so much simpler.

I reset the trip meter when I fill up, and usually fill up when I've done about 400 km, and it costs me $40.

Keeping it simple works for me

I'm with ya. I don't really care about the mileage. I'm now just paying enough attention to make sure there's nothing wrong. I'm not letting the numbers bother me. Life is too short to worry about saving $2 bucks at the pump.

I agree. There's no reason to get all caught up with gas mileage tracking, I've never done it. All I know is that my E is pretty consistant, when I get around 265 miles or 270 on the trip odom, it's time to hit the pump

Is it all in my head or do (guess I should say did LOL) any of you notice a difference in MPG when filling up at different gas stations? I have noticed that I get better MPG when I fill up at a Sheetz, BP or Eagle Express. I do the same type of driving, mostly city every day and I can get around 23-24 MPG. Anywhere else, 20-21 MPG. I was thinking, maybe it's because they were recently built. The Sheetz and Eagle Express are fairly new in reference to when they were built but the BP that I use has been around for a very long time.

Yeah, I know, I'm putting too much thought into it.

Yep - Done, too... BUT a radical option?

Yes, no matter how I drive, I'm pretty consistent like you guys.

HOWEVER, I may get a new job requiring a 40 min. commute -- almost ALL highway driving. I'm starting to look for something radical to do to make for better mileage because I'd like to keep my E.

Just made my last car payment, so could afford modifications if something is out there.

Go buy a dirt cheap geo metro that has a bad engine and swap it to electric. spend pennys a day traveling up to 80 miles per charge (12 hours to charge)

and put the E in the garage to protect it.... all your saved gas money will buy nice E mods ;)

Come, on - you didn't buy the Element for a gas miser cars. A few thousands reviews easily available to set you straight on that myth.

Heck yes I'm with you!!! I've been that way for several years with mine. Full on AC in the humid summer, big meat tires with some aggressive tread, side steps, roof rack, full throttle at 70 - 80 on the highway, 30-40 in town.

Drive it like you stole it for a couple hundred thousand miles. Fill it when empty. Reload and go. Wash, rinse, repeat.

But that's why I'm the....

And thus perpetuates the myth of electric cars "saving money", especially home-brew conversions.

Take it from a 100% electric car owner: there is no savings. What you save in gasoline cost you more than spend in battery replacement. Lead-acid batteries have a limited number of charge/use cycles. IOW, you may use very little electricity, or you may perceive it as cheap, but the batteries are consumed.

Without getting into the eye-glazing math, my electric car, electricity+batteries, costs roughly the same to run per mile as an ICE vehicle getting 25 mpg with gasoline costing ~$3.00/gallon. And this on a vehicle that has a 20-mile range per charge on a good day.

There is no free lunch.

This is hopefully changing with the new generation of electrics using lithium-ion batteries, but I am definitely "We'll see..." before jumping on that bandwagon again.

My whole obsession started when I sold an Avalanche that I loved and I was trying to justify downsizing. College and braces for the kids meant a more economical vehicle. The E has proved itself over and over again that it sips gas even on it's worst tank compared to the Avalanche. The Ave had a 31 gallon fuel tank so it would go a lot farther on a tank than the E but that's after dropping twice the $$ to fill it. It was pretty much 14 city/19 hwy. I had pipes on it so throttle romping was pretty habitual. So, now that I've had the E about 9 months I think I'm finally over the giant Chevy. Hey I had a big vehicle with plastic panels so at least I can have those :) . I am having fun driving the E and seriously I can't see much if any difference in mileage vs nursing the throttle before (not that I'm checking)

I like my Element for the utility, especially being so dog friendly with plastic interior and I like the simplicity and ruggedness. I didn't want 12 mpg but also I didn't really buy it with fuel economy as a priority. That said you'd think Honda would be able to make it get closer to what something like the 2.4L GMC Terrain gets in mpg - the Terrain is few inches lower but still tall and boxy, and is longer and heavier and has 16 more hp than the E but reportedly gets 32 mpg hwy which is 7 more mpg than the E says on the sticker.

i reset the trip odometer after every fill-up. then drive it however i want. at the next fill-up i note the gallons required to fill, check the odometer and reset it, do the arithmetic (generally in my head) to figure out the mpg, and compare that to what i normally get. if not in the normal range, i'd look for a reason. if in the normal range, i just drive on.

OK, my first "fun/relaxed" tank I needed 11.76 gallons to replace 223.7 miles since the last fillup. About 2 miles with the low fuel light on. This was lot's of passing (but I wasn't a jerk), almost all a/c driving and 100% in town trips. I did have fun driving and am s'pose to be not obsessing so I won't even do the mpg math for the above numbers...
