I've only been browsing these boards for about a week, but since we got a new Eternal Blue Pearl EX 4WD today, I thought I'd share my story.

My '91 Accord with 178k developed transmission troubles, so we decided that it wasn't worth fixing since the transmission would be almost as much as the car was worth anyway. So, we needed another car. Since our last car purchase, our family has grown in size. No longer just me and my wife, we now have a kid and two dogs. With that in mind we thought we needed a mini-van, as we figured SUV's would probably be out of our price range.

Last weekend, we hit most of the dealers, and we pretty much underwhelmed by the minivans. The new Mazda was all right, but still didn't move us. We hit the Honda dealer last, thinking to look at the Odyssee's. Next to the Odysee's were the Elements, about 10-12 or so. After convincing the sales guy we wanted to look at them ("Oh, those are aimed at young people" ), we took a look inside, then for a quick spin.

I had first seen the Element on a business trip to LA. We at an intersection, and one turned past us, and I thought "What the heck is that?". When I saw that it had no carpet, I knew it would be great for a toddler who thinks of food as modern art, and two dogs who've never let a mud puddle get the best of them. The engine seemed to have plenty of pep. Maybe not as much as the Accord, but certainly better than the Escort we have. But it was tons roomier that both (probably put together!). In the Escort, with the car seat behind my wife, she had to move her seat almost all the way up to even get it in. So we would drive with her having to almost put her knees to her chin. In the Element, the car seat can be behind me with my seat all the way back there's still plenty of room.

Anyway, we looked last weekend, but decided ultimately that we would probably get the Element, but at some time in the future, since there really wasn't a pressing need to get the second car, just a convience. However, on Monday my wife found out she got the job she applied for, so need raised up again. Then the crash tests came out, and it was back to probably waiting until we could get one with side airbags. So today (Saturday) comes around, one week after we first looked at the Elements, we were back at the dealer "just to look". We told the sales guy, that we were really waiting on one with side airbags, and got ready to go, then thought to ask what he could do on the one that he had (we really liked the EBP color, and it was the only one in that color they had - we thought they'd sold it, but that had just moved it out front). We went through the show of him bringing out the invoice ($19722). I said if he could do invoice, we might be interested, but he indicated that he could do $200 over invoice so we agreed.

We went ahead and got the keyless entry ($236 - good price? I don't know, probably not). The dealer had put on splash guards, and pinstriping, but nothing else. On the way out, he said he noticed that it had locking lug nuts, but he wasn't going to worry about it. I also noticed two small dents in the hood, that they'll fix when they install the keyless entry.

So we drove home in our new Element. Impulsive? Yes. Probably not a good deal, but at every stop light and stop sign on the way back home, I would look back and see the grin on my wife's face and knew it was the right purchase.

That's my story, basically a week's worth of shopping, then a purchase, probably violating every consumer car purchase tennent in existance, but we love it, making up excuses just to go somewhere. We've already shown it to two neighbors withing an hour of getting home, both seemed pretty excited. One of them said he had been looking at them, but ultimately went with a Civic instead (they have three kids).

Wow, sorry that was so long, hope I didn't bore you.

Take care,

GES
