Intermittent dash lights and radio

I added a 2005 EX MT 4WD to my "fleet" and it has some intermittent electrical issues. First, I noticed the radio will just shut off randomly and it does the same thing if a CD is being played...it just shuts off and usually after a few seconds I can push the power button and it will come back on. It also sporadically has the speedometer/dash lights not work - usually they are fine but sometimes I turn on the headlights and only the needles on the speedo, tach, and gauges will glow red and the rest of the lights don't work...sometimes I can bang on the dash and they will come on and sometimes they don't. When they do work, they all work fine...so I assume the dash lights is some sort of a grounding issue? I realize the radio could be related or it could be totally independent and related to the radio itself.

At this point I mostly car about fixing the dash lights so they behave. Should I just pull the speedometer assembly and clean all the contacts etc., or does anyone have any other advice on where best to start with this?

You might have something going on with the dash lights dimmer circuit. I just worked through mine. I posted the diagram on this thread:

These gauge symptoms are usually caused by a loose plug connection on the back of the speedo cluster. Many of us have bolstered/ shimmed that plug connection and the issues stop.

If this does not work then you may have an alternator/ bad battery/ or bad battery cable.

I'm going to pull the speedo cluster this weekend and check everything. An update on the symptoms: the dash lights don't work at all now when I turn on the headlights - all I see are the speedo, tach and other needles glowing red and the backlight on the odometer, as well as any dash indicator lights such as turn signals, CEL or air bag etc. when they are lit, otherwise none of the actual dash lights. This includes all the temperature control lights and the hazard switch light being off when headlights are on. The radio still works for the most part - it lights up when headlights are off but once they are switched on, the radio info displays but not the backlight. Also the radio is continuing its cycling on/off randomly and its doing this much more than previously - sometimes it works fine for my entire commute (15-25 minutes) and other times it cycles on and off repeatedly as I'm driving. I can't really see how this is an alternator or battery problem, as everything else works fine and the battery is charging and is starting the car fine, headlights work fine etc.
