Our 2007 Element has been idling rough for several months. The CEL light just came on and we took it to our mechanic. His computer identified cylinders 1 & 3 aren't firing right. It only seems rough while just standing still although there might be some decreased acceleration power. He's about to do a compression test. He asked us to do some looking on the web as it could be so many different things. The fuel trim is good. Vehicle has 118,000 miles on it and has had scheduled maintenance, oil changes, transmission flushes, spark plugs changed, etc. We have not had the valve clearances inspected as recommended at 110,000. Any ideas?

Valve adjustment

Why do people seem to ignore the service interval for checking/adjusting the valves?? This is so important for the longevity of the engine. And the wallet. A valve job to repair burnt valves is around $1000 to $1400. And people cheat out on the $150 for this?

i know you said the spark plugs were changed, but anybody that knows hondas knows how sensitive they are at low idle if spark plugs are not correct type or worn etc. The k series engines are particulary sensitive if iridium plugs are not used, so are worth a quick check and also the coluor of the spark plug will tell alot about the health of the engine.
