Usually I like to help by giving answers but got a question about the trans after a very stupid thing I did. I got cut off the other day and took off after the person and blew the shift from 3rd to 4th and got 2nd instead and it was a quick shift like back in the race days. RIGHT!! I damn near over revved the engine but now have a very slight wub wub sound from what sounds like from the gear on the final front diff. It only makes it after the trans has warmed up and is constant to tire RPM and will change tone very slightly as the gas pedal is varied. I wonder if I shouldn't worry about it unless it gets worse or change out the trans with my spare that I was going to do a 6 speed mod and never got to it. I fell like a idiot for doing what I did and if I didn't tell anyone riding in the E they wouldn't know by how quiet it is. It almost sounds like a tire has a cupped spot on it other then the level of the sound changing to the gas pedal movement.

It changes tone with road speed and is definitely not a tire sadly. It does change tone with loading like a bad gear mesh but it not very noticeable at all when cold. I have to take 2 long drives this weekend hauling a dog to Vegas and will see what its doing after that.

Update. After 1000 miles the whine is still there when the E is neutral loaded but has not got any louder or quieter. What I am wondering is to leave it alone or change it out and if there is any tranny specialists on the board that can tell me what to look for.

I have decided that I am going to change the trans out with my spare. Does anyone know the book time to R+R a manual 4X4 trans? I ether will have it changed or do it myself if the time is high.

Judging by the quotes around here, book time for an R/R appears to be in the 11-12 hour range. It's pretty much in line with any FWD. The PTO for the AWD system adds no complexity - four bolts on the driveline flange, and that's it. Be sure to follow the various advice around here (including mine) regarding the front ball joints.

Have you tried changing the trans oil? We might see if 1) freshening the lube brings viscosity back up to spec enough to mitigate the apparent mesh problem, even if just a little, and especially 2) to see if there are transmission bits on the drain plug magnet.

#2 will tell you for sure if there is a transmission swap in your near future.

Yea its getting a little louder and I figured I would change it before it tears itself up and cost a lot more to rebuild. I will check the drain plug next week. Can't believe that many hours. I thought the Nissan trans that I changed many years ago at 8 hours was a lot. Guess I will be doing it myself as I also be removing the lift.

The 6.9 sounds a lot better. When I do it I will do a photo shoot of the poor E with its front end off but still going to check the oil beforehand. It would be fun to do both at the same time. Ok who can do the change faster!!!

Did you ever change your transmission? I noticed the same day as your last post on this thread you had it smashed by a crack head? What is the condition of your ride now?

It wasn't mine that was hit but another SOP in FL. I am going to change the oil first and see if it gets quieter and if not I will change it on a weekend along with taking out the lift at the same time.
