After having my goodies I picked up at PepBoys, and my groceries, roll around, slide around, rattle around and generally drive me bananas making noise back in the hatch, I said "Something's got to be done!"

I wanted something to cushion the compartment from whatever I put in there. Clearly a cargo mat like the one Honda sells would do that. So would a blanket or quilt or anything like that.

BUT, I also thought some grip would be desirable. Something that stopped the roll and scoot of the items in there, ya dig?

So the best idea I came up with - one of those foamy rubber pads that you use to keep a rug in place on a wood/tile floor.

So I went to TJMaxx today (looking for a dog bed) and found a Yoga/Pilates pad that is made of the perfect material.

It was $14.99, they had wild colors - I picked orange!! - and although I haven't unrolled it to cut it to fit, I believe it is very close to right size. (Right size being the dimension of the hatch, with the back seats sitting down.)

This is not the brand I purchased, but you can get an idea of the material from looking at this picture:

I'm a clever Hellcat, if I do say so myself.

I got a dog bed and a dog rug at a pet supply store. I debated getting something big and cushy but ultimately decided to get something simple. It's designed really to go into the bottom of a crate or carrier, and it's sheepskin. It fits the dimensions of a rear seat quite well. To give Henry the option of sitting on the floorboard, I also got a small sheepskin rug.

My brilliant notion: I'm going to attach (probably with velcro) two small metal loops to the underside on each side, and bungee cord the dog bed in place. Because of the contour of the seat, it shouldn't scoot too much anyway but this would keep it quite stable, for less dog scooting.

Pictures to follow soon. Featuring: Henry!

With all of the room between the front seats and back seats, I am able to fit a dog "crate" in place and it can't slide around. A good safe place for Oscar and Betty when we go anywhere with them.

I went a different way and bought a Rubbermaid 50 gallon tub at Target:

(sorry if pics don't work - am new at this...)

At $14.36, this has got to be cheaper than the OEM "cargo box" (different from the "cargo tray"). If you push it back into a corner, there's a 4" gap on the side and front. This can easily be addressed with 2 rolled up beach towels to prevent sliding. No good for a dog, but the tub will certainly keep loose items from bouncing/sliding around and possibly scratching the E's soft plastic interior sides.
