I stopped in at an outdoor/climbing store and asked if he knew where I could buy bungee by the foot.

He told me that they can't get it. "There are two manufacturers and they are sold out for the summer so there is a National Bungee Shortage."

Are there people out there that are hoarding bungee cord or is this shortage due to the sale of Elements? What could cause this bungee crisis?

Perhaps the supplier of bungee for the store that you stopped buy is back ordered.....but there is plenty of bungee out there....check Marine West or another boating supply store....also there is a guy on EBay with TONS of bungee....$20 for a huge spool, lots of cool colors, several members have ordered from him!

Check ebay. I bought orange bungee to match my SOP from an ebay dealer. With shipping, it's $20 for 150 feet, which is enough to share with fellow SOP-owners. I think this is the same as what I bought:

Who needs bungees.. I used some multicolor hiking boot shoe laces and they work just fine. all you need to do is lace them a little tighter. cost me all of 2 bucks.

boat usa or west marine sells by the foot in like 5 diff colors i bought 45 ft of 1/4" blue for like 18.00 ill post to get rid of the rest when i get done trying diff patterns lol
