No green flashy key light, no go. Period. The whole immobilizer thing is tied into the engine computer, and without the electronic "open sesami", it's a hunk of scrap metal.
Enough of the funny stuff.
I don't recall reports of the immobilizer having problems after a battery outage, but that's not to say it can't happen (or that my memory is toast!). Disconnecting things for 10-20 minutes to reset the ECU is exactly what I would have done first. If after doing that you don't get the green from the immobilizer, then it's time for a tow truck.
