P2422 - EVAP vent valve stuck closed?

Man I have been having trouble with this.

Code just all of a sudden popped up this morning.

Spent some time researching, but doesn't seem to be that common. Not rare, but not deeply discussed.

So what unit is the Evap Vent Valve? I haven't been able to find a single picture on the forum showing this that still works. I've seen people say its under the car, some say it's in the engine bay. No one mentioning part numbers. One dude talks about a spider, Honda has a TSB talking about spiders. I found on youtube, someone talking about it, I think it was that first guy, and I found that part he was talking about, but mine was empty. Dusty... but far from clogged.

Side note, it's possible its a gas cap.. since I'm starting to suspect my gas cap is not oem.. but it never had this code before and my gas cap doesn't go through much wear since I don't drive this that often at all.

Gas cap would be the first thing I would try if it's not an OEM.

Maybe this will help:

But +1 on replacing your aftermarket gas cap.

The code basically means that when the vent valve is open, the ecm is not seeing a pressure/vacuum change.

Most times I see this code is due clogging of the fresh air inlet side of the vent valve.
Take a look there. Every time its a spider nest inside the tubing, blown out with shop air and lands on the floor. Dam little buggers!

Which part am I looking for on this diagram?

So where is this inlet side of the vent valve?
What part is the vent valve?

Any part numbers or anything so I know what i'm physically looking for?

Click on the image and it will take you to a parts list.
Looks like 11 is the filter, and 31 is the inlet. so make sure those are clear/no restriction.

Thanks, I will.

That #31 part is difficult to get to. I checked that and it was not clogged. Dusty, but far from being clogged.

I'll try and hunt down part #11 as you mentioned. thanks!
Check the tube also#19.
Patrick, if it was the gas cap your odometer should scroll "check gas cap", at least on my 05' it did.

I will definitely check that as well. About to go under the Element right now

Oh interesting. Cool. Didn't think I'd have that on my cluster. My s2000 doesn't have that, and I ended up getting a code which I diagnosed down to the gascap.

So I pulled out parts 17, 18, 19, 31, and 11.

I cleaned them out using brake cleaner since it has higher pressure, and fast evaporation.

They were a little dirty but I didn't notice any clogs.

I deleted the code but the code came back after about 10 miles.

Part 11, what exactly does that do?

I couldn't really tell if it was functioning right. On the bigger opening side there's some kind of valve that I can push on and has some movement. Feels like it's spring loaded and can be pushed in maybe 10mm in. I sprayed it with brake clean and all but that too didn't seem like it was necessarily clogged. I could not figure how to open #11. Seems like it's a sealed unit.

The hoses seemed fine.

Patrickjamesyu, if you plan to keep doing maintenance on your car, a service manual is invaluable and will answer just about all questions.
At this point you will need a scanner and evaporative emissions smoke machine. The scanner will close all valves and then pressurize the system with the smoke machine. Command the vent valve open and the pressure should drop.

So its probably a job for a professional.

Keep us posted with what you find.

Indeed does sound a little beyond me.

As a last DIY step, I'm going to pull what I think is the vent valve solenoid (only thing I saw with an electrical harness), give it 12volts and see or hear for any kind of change. I can rig up something to give it pressure, some low pressure hoses and such, give it a tiny bit of pressure, and see if I can make something happen.

Thanks for the tips

I've never purchased one before. Are you referring to a specific one? Or do repair manuals often have many different authors? Should I be looking for a specific one like Haynes or maybe there's one published from Honda themselves?

Thanks!
Vent valves are normally open to vent the tank with the key off. Powering up the valve will close it. The code sets because it does not see the pressure/vacuum readings change. Maybe the valve sticks closed. But 99 out of 100 are restrictions. Good luck.

okay, I'll further check for restrictions.

Not sure what else to check, but maybe I'll remove the entire evap assembly from under the car and see if I can figure it out from there.

There is nothing under the hood I should be checking?
