I would go get it looked at.
My 5sp 4wd has been getting better and better when it comes to mileage. I average about 24 to 26 mpg easily.

I have only 1700 miles on my E, and I've been averaging 21 mpg in mostly city driving. But I just did a trip of about 600 miles, and on the return leg (284 miles at 70-75mph) I averaged 26.6 mpg on my 4wd auto. That may not be up there with my Saturn or my old Rabbit Diesel, but it's definitely acceptable.

I've had mine only a few weeks and average about 250 miles on each tank.. I've only filled up about 4 or 5 times currently. I have the AWD EX... I hope it improves otherwise my road trips will just be sprints between gas stations.

When i gased up today, after the nozzle cut off I was still able to put in just over 2 more gallons of gas. I think the "extra" fuel might help my gas milage, My fuel light came on today and I drove about 8 more miles before gasing up and filled with about 13 gallons of gas...

[quote:75ea7d7ea4="yoko"]My mileage seems to be getting worse and worse. At 800 miles, my element is now getting about 15 mpg. Ideas???[/quote:75ea7d7ea4]

Definitely have the dealer check it out. Although a long shot, your transmission could be failing to upshift into a higher gear. Do you have the overdrive switched off?

What tire pressure are you running I just went to 34F/36R and feels like it rolls much better... next tank will prove it. Seen some posting with people at 44PSI but I suspect you will get uneven wear on your tires (more in the middle).

Also, if you have a 5 spd. and drive 75/80 from another thread seems like the 5spd. revs at 3400-3500 at 75mph vs. 3000-3100 at 75mph for a stock auto E. One guy with only an upgraded exhaust (2.5" from CC to Borla Turbo XS muffler and tip- saved 50+lb.) says he does 80mph at 3000-3100 in his auto E.

15mph seems way low but possible if your foot technique is hard on, brake, hard on, brake... I drove with a friend of mine that drove me nuts with his fast-slow-fast-slow style... check your RPM in your top gear at 60,65,70,75, 80 and post, bottom line is more RPM's more fuel and the more you turn forward movement into brake heat the more you burn. I remember as a kid driving in with an older friend in her toyota up and down hills and coasting all the way down them in N, we got 40+mpg on that ride (don't ask me why I remember that, I was 10, maybe because she let us steer!).

Hope this helps...

[quote:3e5399bc6e="switters"]where the gas pump cuts off has no bearing on what fuel economy is.[/quote:3e5399bc6e]

Dude if your able to squeeze 2 more gallons in, then you take out your handy calculator and take the number of gallons by the number of miles you driven, it will give you a different number then if your gas pump stops and you add 2 gallons less, you are going to be affected by your calculation cause you think your full, and your car got that many miles more with 2 gallons less.

Geez.. Might not make a difference if you had a computer in the car that did it based on actuals.

I think that might be the reasons for some people saying they get 28 miles per gallon, others getting 21. the 21 is probably the more accurate number. Driving on a long trip I never got more than 23. Always checked the gas pump by engaging it again, and had it give more than 1 gallon more on more than one occasion.

You are correct, the "wildcard" on calculating mileage is did you fill the tank up to the same point you did the last time... some faster pumps shut off early as they foam the fuel more triggering the pump to shut off... i know the tank will take 12+ gallons so when i hit 12, i take the pump off the fastest pump rate to about half then quarter, you get a pretty accurate fill each time...

if you use ac, drive 75mph and rev it over 4500 through the gears (auto or stick) seems like you are right on 21-23mpg, i did get 24.5mpg my first tank because i kept revs below 3000 rpm through the gears and below 65 mph on the highway... that speed was killer for me, i went from a bmw 530i to my E, 75mph has been an adjustment but that seems to keep the rpms around 3100...

A true test would be to always use the same pump at the same gas station.

And sspiller that first tank was a killer rate (actually first two) as my husband had me go 500 miles before he'd let me take it over 60mph. Agh!!!
