Chris. Yes I got the 12v from the taillight. It is a bear. The guy I asked to install wanted $400. Plus extra for some other service. My fingers were raw for a coup!e days but I think it was worth it in the end for me.
It was a pain to run the video cable all the way back. If I had to do it again I'd buy this cable:

Saves either the trouble of powering the camera from anywhere in the rear or it saves you the trouble of tapping the relay for the reverse trigger behind the dash.

My Joying unit doesn't like getting power from the reverse tail light. It wants power before the trigger so tapping to the 12v accessory connector on the right rear solves that.

So everything is all hooked up but my back up camera didn't turn on. I assume I have to use the reversing wire on the HU (even thou my instructions say I don't need it). My video cable does have the little red wires on each end but I don't know how to hook them up. I'm assuming it needs the reverse light 12v. That's no bueno because that part is in the tailgate …far away from the tail light. or can that red lead fit into the rca jack that feeds the camera?

You must have the reverse lead to the head unit connected to the reverse light voltage of the car. The unit uses the trigger wire to switch modes. It actually has nothing to do with android and can actually show your backup camera during head unit bootup....for obvious reasons.

Link to your backup camera product page.

You will have a power lead on the camera somewhere. I'd connect that to 12v and not the reverse light voltage. My camera probably takes a half second to activate after power. If the head unit reverse wire triggers while the camera is still starting my unit doesn't get video.

Wire it to the 12v socket in the back for constant power. Yes, its a pain, but if you haven't run the backup camera line yet run it down the passenger side so you have the panels off anyway.

or can that red lead fit into the rca jack that feeds the camera?
Take a picture or link to the product page.

I already powered the camera with the reverse tail light. I could fairly easily cut and move that wire to the 12v socket (after taking that panel off) and then run a wire from the tail light up to the head unit instead of going back into the tail gate to get that little red lead on the rca jack. That would allow me to split the camera feed to an Aux input as well…..hmmmm

Thanks for the information Pounce

I'm running a Joying 10.1" unit in our Element with the Malaysk ROM. Screen is nice and big and overall its a pretty good value.
What 10.1 unit did you go with that would fit? Can we get a pic of how it looks installed?

Love the idea of the 10? screen, just wondering how you finished it off. I've already done a pumpkin unit in my last vehicle and loved it.

I'll take a pic tomorrow. These units are basically a 10" tablet slapped on the front of a double DIN unit. You can tilt the face up and down if you need. From the site images I thought I would be able to adjust the face right and left also by moving the clips on the back of the face by removing the screws, but its a no go. Not a big deal. I just wanted to offset the unit toward the driver. I also wanted to drop the face a bit to clear the vents more. It does block the vents slightly, but totally worth it for the size in my opinion.

GrampyPoo,

I have a pumpkin unit too, but was unable to get the steering wheel controls to work on my 2008 EX - Did you do anything special? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Tristan
How did you connect it? All of these units are basically the same.

There are two wires. One is ground. Connect the ground to the ground lead on the harness. Connect the other wire to the key1 connector.

With the unit powered up you can go into settings and map the buttons by pressing the physical button and then touching the corresponding soft button on the config screen. You repeat that for each physical button. You can map the buttons however you like.

I am not using a metra adapted or anything like that, but basically I wired key 1 on the pumkin (i tried key 2 as well) to pin 3 in this diagram on the wiring harness http://contentdocs.installernet.com/documents/vehicle/10879.pdf

Then the ground to ground. I tried both the ground in the harness and the accessory ground...

No dice... I guess I'll try the metra adapter next? I ordered this one:

Am I missing anything ?

Thank you!

Did you ground pin 14?

Yes. Like I mentioned, there are two wires. If you are just fiddling with one you are missing one. It happens to be the ground.

Resistive switches connect power to ground through a resistor of a given number. The system can then check the value and determine the meaning of the switch based on the resistance.

I got it working, I was using two wires, but one was the ground from the Pumpkin.

Where i went wrong.... Was splicing the wrong wire from the harness, so as per usual. Idiot error.

Super excited I got it all working, thank you for your help!

I ended up just powering the backup camera from the reverse lights and jumpered it for the trigger wire too. Best Buy didn't have the video splitter in stock and I was tired of having my console open so I got lazy. The Metra trim kit didn't work…the face of the Pumpkin HU isn't flush.

Old thread I know but I am going to order & install one of these units. Did you guys set up your own wiring, or go with a pre made harness? I'm working with a '09 EX with the non-navigaton 7 speaker stereo. I looked at the Metra 70-7863 Amplifier Retention Wire Harness... is this plus the antenna adapter gonna do it, or is there more I will need? Plug N play with the mentioned harness, or will I need to break out the soldering iron? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
