The immobilizer reads a RF chip in your key. Each key is unique. The key you use to try to start the car must match the ID programmed into the computer to allow the car to start.

The radio code protects the radio itself from theft (sort of - it's primitive). When all power is removed from the radio (blown radio fuse, dead battery, changing the battery) then the radio will not work until the code is entered on the radio. Once activated it will continue to work because there is 12v applied all the time to maintain the radio's memory channels.
