To cut down some more of the heat and glare through the tinted windows in the back of the Element, I would like to put curtains up for the dogs when we're trippin' through the valley. I know we don't have vehicle inspections like I used to go through with cars when I lived in Pennsylvania gazillion years ago, so I am not sure what the cops will tolerate here or not. Thanks in advance for your assist.
I haven't seen any during my visit here to Arizona, but if they're behind tinted windows, and you didn't have them on there all the time, i don't think it'd be a problem.
it would be no different than a cargo type astro van. according to the dot/nhtsa you have to have the ability to see "rearward" from 2 points in your vehicle, the driver side mirror and either the windshield mounted rearview mirror or a passenger side mounted mirror on cargo type vehicles. remember the old civics? some of the dx's didnt come with a passenger side mirror many years ago, cause they had the center rearview. ;-)
In AZ the only windows that are required to be unobstructed are the front windows and windshield. You could paint the rest black if you want. 30% can be used on the front windows, but I have been fine with 15%. I have all of the rear windows limo tinted (5%) on top of the stock tint. It is about 1-2%. I can't see squat at night when I back up but it sure keeps me and the doggies cooler during the warmer months.
My left rear window is blocked all the time. There's a piece of reflective bubble pack cut to fit, plus it's a convenient storage place for other pieces that I use when camping. The driver can't see out that window anyways, so blocking it shouldn't be a problem. I prefer the keep the other rear window clear, so I can see when changing lanes.
