Just 2 weeks of Element ownership (2003) and I have a couple of ideas that would add to the utility of the Element:

1. Inside latch for the rear hatch. This one has been mentioned by a ton of people and hopefully has been added by now. Just seems obvious that a car that is designed for sleeping in would have an interior latch to open the back hatch. both latch and lock are needed.

2. Why not design the rear seats so that you can completely reverse them and have them facing backwards? Maybe this is not allowed by safety regulations but it could be a cool option for a drive-in movie, tailgating, or camping. It seems like it would only take some fairly simple adjustments to the design to make this work.

3. I would like some screen inserts that easily attach to the inside of the back windows and the moonroof without removing the moonroof.

that's all for now.

There is a Honda interior skylight screen accessory (link here; scroll about halfway down the page), but it has its detractors. Skreenz makes an exterior moonroof screen. A few of us have made exterior screens for the rear side windows, but AFAIK there is no commercially available version.

thanks - I do appreciate your response. I have seen the things you referenced and I have looked at a number of mods for the interior latch but the reason I posted it here was because it seems like something that Honda should have obviously added. I'm considering different options to decide which interior latch to attempt myself.

Screens, too, I'm going to try to construct myself but really want something I can easily mount on the interior without removing the upper moonroof or anything else.

I just thought it would have been nice if Honda had considered these items.

cheers!

Wonder why this is still an issue?

Toolbox's point is as valid in 2009 as it was when I asked in 2005.

And by a whole buncha others in-between.

Now my question is, why hasn't Honda responded (given that several of us provided superb engineering solutions) and incorporated some form on inside latch-release. Maybe one of the moderators or a company person could let us know?

Maybe they're afraid kids will open the back door on the freeway, or some silly liability thing like that...

That's a very good guess. For that reason, if they did put a latch in the inside, they'd probably make it electrical, with an interlock to prevent it from working while the engine was running. Never a simple solution where tort lawyers are involved.

uh, it's no different than a kid opening a regular door while driving down the road.

All they'd have to do is put in one of those "kid safety latches" that you see on the back doors of all cars. That keeps the interior door handle from opening from the inside. but leaves the exterior working.

kinda like a cop car. But without being drunk and tasered.
