Has anyone just replaced the resonator with a straight pipe on the stock exhaust? I'm wondering how that would sound? A little more tone but not too loud or droning annoyance??

I did. Replc with 2.5" piping and stock muff. No droning what so eva. Slightly sportier tone. The sporty tone just gets louder when you step on it.

So why..?

So what is the purpose of the resonator in the stock exhaust system if the net difference is so small?

no resonator here either. had it removed when i needed to get a hole in the exhaust repaired.
it has a deeper growl.
and of course the drone from about 2700-2900. at 3000 it goes away. typical for an inline four.
haven't regretted the operation yet!!

Resonaton

I replaced my complete cat back using 2 inch same as OE
Magnflow SS Round muffler # 11114 to replace the Resonator and a Dynomax
SS Ultra Flo muffler #17281 with a vibrant SS tip. Whatever pipe I needed bent I had made using SS mandrel bends.
The sound has only changed slightly at 40-50 with very little rumble or drone.
Not any improvements in Gas mileage with an added K & N filter.
