I found the shift lock release cover in my glove box. It should have been installed by the dealer. Does anyone know the purpose of the shift lock release? Why does it require a cover?

The shift lock release is generly used if the battery is dead or there is a failure with the system, other wise when applying the brake this allows you to shift.

My shifter occasionally won't shift out of park. When that happens, you put the key in the lock release and push on it while shifting out of park. I took it to the dealer, but it worked ok at that time, so it still fails once in a while.
