My Yakima setup

I have a few boxes and bikes I've mounted since owning in the past year. All Yakima gear (load warrior, cargo boxes, bike mounts) Enjoy!

I found a low-profile (5 1/2-in tall) rack by Rage Powersports (model: Stingray) that *just about* fit our Yakima mounts, but the only ss u-bolts I could find were either too narrow or too wide, so I made a set of adapters to bolt it directly to the crossbars. The rack now sits ~1-in above the roof, though it could easily be lowered even further by trimming the bottom adapter pieces.

The adapters are made from 1-in thick, UV-resistant marine lumber, drilled to allow for 5/16-in socket head bolts vertically, which pass through a piece of 1/2-in solid aluminum rod inserted horizontally into the top of the lumber. The top edge of both the lumber and aluminum rod are countersunk so that the bolts are recessed even with the top of the adapters.

I'm considering fabricating a larger fairing that would come flush to the roofline; I'll look at our gas mileage after our upcoming trip to the coast to see whether it is really necessary.

Installed my 2" Reese hitch, yakima holdup hitch rack, and thule/rockymounts roof rack last night. Lovin it! I need to figure out if my thule roofbox will fit into the garage still..but not a huge need for it being on right now with ski season winding down.

Just put my Thule MOAB up on my Thule crossbars and feet.

I bought all this stuff used on CL so the MOAB needed some refinishing.

Also, I mounted it with the brackets upside down so it would sit lower on the roof.
It actually touches the roof just in a couple spots, in fact it scratched up the roof when I installed it. If anyone else were going to do this, I would suggest wrapping those spots in gorilla tape or something cushioned...

really wish there were more low racks like the gobi ones... seems like the options are goofy looking top hat or paint damaging low profile.

does look good though

Went to their website and saw your pictures, but I don't see a price. They look nice, and very functional.
Mike plans to have some in production next week and I assume will price them then. This came about because I was going to modify a pair of Kia Soul ones for my E (we have a set on my wifes Soul) and Mike at SSD suggested we work together to do it right. Two rounds of prototypes later, the rails on My E are the result. He's good to work with. We use Malone crossbars on them and both the Soul and the E have been on 900 mile jaunts with Kayaks on board (the E with the prototype rails). I'm pretty sure I can slit the trim plugs to fit over the mount plates but haven't gotten there yet. Assuming I suceed I'll come up with a template for that.

I'm interested in these, they look very clean. I just put a used Thule rack on mine. I like the rack but these look very functional.

Just put the final version of the SSD rails on my E. Used the prototypes going up north with kayaks. They worked excellently but these look good as well.
how has no one thought of this before??? i may have to rethink my Gobi rack fund...
