As we turn full left or full right we get a loud clunk just before the end of travel. Dealer used an"electronic noise locater" & says steering gear is going. $1400 repair. We had CV boots replaced yesterday and I had the mechaninc spin the steering wheel while the axles we disconnected. Clunk was still there. Any experience with a clunk at full left or right?

Steering gear??? And electronic noise finder sounds like the biggest load of BS for ASE certified mechanics. It's too vague of a description but I would take a look at your tie-rods. They're easy to see, located just above the top of your tire. If the rubber boot is cracked or leaking then it is probably the issue. They dry out and cause a popping or clunking sound when turning since there is no lubricant in them.
