I upgraded all of my speakers recently, but am now left without enough juice to push my system. I can run the current amp at full power without clipping and no appreciable strain on the speakers. Is there an amp that has more power than stock and can still fit in the original location?

The only 5 channel amp on the market I know of is made by a reputable German company called Rainbow who is better known for their high quality speakers...

I'm not 100% sure it would really fit because I don't know the exact size of the factory amp but the Rainbow MPA 5.480 P IQ 5 channel amplifier is the smallest 280 watt RMS (480 peak) amp I know of at 7" wide x 6.3" deep x 1.8" thick.

I don't know the cost but you can get company info here:

You can see specs on the MPA 5.480 here:

You could use the 6 ch in order to keep the impedance higher on the sub, but it's at least an inch wider. Again, I'm not sure any of these will really fit considering the stock amp is so small but these are the smalles I know of.

Here's a diagram of the factory amp location under the passenger side dash along the kick panel (thanks to element-j):

And here's a picture of the actual amp (thanks again to element-j):

The MPA 6.570 is 5x70 + 1x220 watts. Your sub would need the same wattage on 2 channels.

You could probably run the one 200 watt channel of the MPA 5.480 to both voice coils of your sub by running the voice coils in a series.
EMass could probably go into more detail.

The primary advantage of the dual voice coil speaker is wiring flexibility. A single dual voice coil driver offers the user three hookup choices...parallel, series and independent.

In a parallel hook-up the drivers impedance will be half that of each individual coil (a dual 4 ohm speaker would be a 2 ohm speaker in parallel.) The advantage to this is that the lower the ohm load, the higher the wattage is to the apeaker. In other words a 50 watt channel at 4 ohm will be 100 watts at 2 ohms. The disadvantage is that a lower impedance (2 ohm) load is much harder for an amp to drive.

A series hook-up results in twice the impedance of each single coil (a dual 4 ohm speaker results in 8 ohms if its coils are wired in series.) The advantage is that an amp that cannot handle a 2 ohm load can be wired up to a dual 4 ohm speaker. The disadvantage is that you lose a lot of wattage. That 50 watt channel at 4 ohms, when presented with a 8 ohm load will only produce 25 watts of power.

Finally, you can wire each voice coil to a separate channel of your amplifier, which can be useful if your amplifier is not mono-bridgeable or if you are bridging a four channel amplifier down to two channels to run your sub. The disadvantage is that the signals must match perfectly and if they do not, you can hurt the speaker.

So as Ramy pointed out - it makes no sense to get the 6 channel version - the 5 (with parallel wiring to the sub) is actually the right choice.

I'm not too sure however what the starting impedance of the stock sub is so I'm not sure if the Rainbow amp can handle the DVC in parallel impedance. If the stock sub is dual 8 ohm - you're safe with parallel - but if it's dual 4 ohm (more likely) then you'll need to be sure that the Rainbow amp is 2 ohm stable in order to do parallel. And being as small as it is - it might not be.

If the sub impedance is 4 ohm per voice coil and the amp is not 2 ohm stable, I'd recommend wiring in series since the Rainbow easily supports 8 ohm loads.

Here's a diagram on the difference between parallel/series/independant sub wiring. The stock sub is wired independantly but could be wired for parallel.

Whatever you do though, do not wire up only one side of a DVC sub, you will damage it.

FYI the 12" single sub in my own ride has dual 4 ohm voice coils. I bridged the two amp channels together (taking + from left channel and - from right channel) effectively making it mono and wired it to the sub in parallel.

[quote:1d8d34eda2="X2E"]Alpine makes a 5 channel amp. I picked one up earlier this week but have not installed it yet.[/quote:1d8d34eda2]

Thanks for the info X2E, however this person wanted info on an amp that would replace the factory amp in the stock location. This Alpine amp is far too big for that purpose.

Where are you planning on installing your amp? Under a seat? Please take some digital pix of your install process and post them here if you can. If you need a place to post your pix I'd be glad to do it for you.

Thanks! :D

Thanks for all the info. I'm having a hard time locating any Rainbow Car Audio dealers in the states. I need to seek out alternatives...does anyone know the exact dimensions of the stock amp? (not sure if I want to start tearing into the kick panels just yet...)

Thanks!

I'll be sure to take plenty of pics.
Now, locating that amp in an out of sight place is not easy. You're right that amp is long which leaves me very few "inexpensive" options. For the time being I'll be mounting the amp under the rear driver side seat. There is plenty of room and sort of out of the way. I'm also exploring the possibility of mounting a bracket to the underside of the rear seat which would allow the amp to lay flat, but because it's attached to the seat, it would also flip up with the seat. I looked at the metal in the seat and it can be done, but I'd like to weld it on for security.
Wow, I just read that and I don't understand it..........I'll take a pic and mark it off on Wed. This is going to be a busy week stereo wise so I'll post what I can, when I can.

This is all I have so far

I think this amp would actually fit inplace of the stock one with very little modification, the dimensions seem pretty close from what I remember when I pulled the factory amp out to look at it. This is a great idea. I checked out the website for Rainbow and from what I see the only US distributer is http://www.arcaudio.com. This is a great idea for a factory replacement, WOW a good clean 70 x 4 + 1 x 200 rms. I'll try to get a price on this amp

Got a quote back on the Rainbow amp. The MPA 5.420 (5-channel / 420 watt) amp is the only one available. Get this...the retail is $999, but they'll let me have it for $799.  :D :?

Hey, a good 5 channel amp is at least 4 or 5 hundred dollars so the question is, what additional premium are you willing to pay for a completely hidden unit?

Hey X2E, where'd ya get the SOP speaker mounts?

Yeah - those speaker pods are killer! Did you mold those yourself?

.................................................................................................

I wish I had the time and know how to make those. I had the stereo guys that I've been dealing with for many years build them up. They are wood and fibreglass and smooth like a babies bottom. I was told the color match paint was a 3 step process, and they did it wrong the first time, so that delayed things a few days.

I hope to have most things up and running by the end of next week. Had some issues with my head unit install, so I'll have to order the install kit posted by emass in a previous post.
