I was surfing around and had to go join, just so I could respond to this.
Personally, my parents bought my first two cars for me. The first (Fiat Strada) when I was 15 and didn't even have my driver's license, and the next when I was 17 (Dodge Omni). Both were used and I treated both like crap! I didn't appreciate them or take care of them. I think it depends on the child and how responsible they are. Unfortunately, I wasn't a very responsible teenager, but learned it later in life.
When I bought my first new care ('93 Honda Civic Ex Coupe which I still have) I made sure the oil was changed regularly, required maintenance done, etc. and this weekend I'm going to sell the old Honda and replace it with the new Element (4wd EX galapagos green).
erie542 sounds like a very responsible person. If his parents can afford the $20,000 +, God bless 'em. I hope to be able to do the same for my daughter, but think she's going to get stuck with the puke green Gremlin!
