.......since it's very obvious that a lot of people are having a problem with cracking windsheilds, is there anything recommended that us E drivers who have been lucky not to have any problems, YET, can do to protect the windsheild.

i.e. any chemical hardeners or anything?

This may sound a little arrogant in its simplicity, but

The windshield cracks mostly when rocks fall out of the sky and hit it.. or it hits them.

So if you can avoid places where it seems to rain rocks that would be a good first step. If you can not avoid those places try not to hit them as hard... by driving more slowly.

Partial list of places where it rains rocks:

1. Behind gravel trucks on the freeways.
2. Behind trucks without mudflaps on the freeways.
3. Behind any vehicle following in the path of a gravel truck on a freeway.
4. Behind any vehicle with one tire on the shoulder.
5. Behind any vehicle with one or more wheels in the center of a lane on a farm to market road.
6. Behind any vehicle towing a flatbed trailer that may have ever carried anything that gets muddy.
7. Behind any vehicle towing a flatbed trailer that may have ever carried anything that gets muddy when it goes over a bump in the road like at the end of a bridge.

anyway... drive in the center lane and don't tailgate.

I was driving on the Beltway around Washington, DC last Sunday. Everyone was going around 70 mph when a pea-sized piece of gravel slammed into my windshield. Just about scared me to death from the sound, but absolutely NO damage!
